Heward Keeps Mono-ski Streak Alive

Abtenau, Austria (Friday, January 31, 2003) - Lacey Heward (LW-11; Boise, ID) kept alive the U.S. women's mono-skiing World Cup win streak in Europe Friday as she obliterated the field to win a giant slalom by 10.42 seconds.

Heward's winning, two-run time was an adjusted 2:38.53 with Japanese veteran Kuniko Obinata a distant second in 2:48.95 with temperatures in the upper 20s. A year ago, U.S. women won eight straight mono-ski races in Europe before the Paralympics and Stephani Victor (LW-12/2; Park City, UT) won a slalom Thursday to open this season.

Mary Riddell (LW-4; Dove Creek, CO) was the other podium performer for the U.S., finishing second in the stand-up category behind Lauren Woolstencroft (LW-3/1) of Canada.

Among U.S. men, George Sansonetis (LW-9/2; Winter Park, CO) was 11th among the stand-ups while Daniel Metivier (LW-12/1; Heber City, UT) was 12th in the mono-skiing class.

"Lacey skied incredibly strong," said Coach Kevin Jardine, "and Mary led after the first run but ended up second as Lauren Woolstencroft came from behind on the final run to win."

The visit to Abtenau concludes Saturday with a super G, the lone super G on the schedule this season. A lack of snow has forced organizers in Wildschoenau to drop speed events so the World Cup group will two giant slaloms and a pair of SLs.
