Mammoth Mountain Ski Area Snowfall Approaches Record Levels

Mammoth Mountain, CA (Wednesday, May 11, 2005) - It may be spring, but it sure looks like winter in Mammoth, where spring storms have dropped 31 inches of new snow this May on the California ski and snowboard resort. The season snowfall total is now up to a whopping 607 inches. The 2004/05 season has been the second snowiest season on record in Mammoth, and is only ten inches away from breaking the resort's all-time record.

Mammoth had its earliest opening in a decade this season on October 21, 2004 after 81 inches of snow fell during the month. With a current base depth of 13 to 15 feet, Mammoth has announced plans to extend the ski and snowboard season at least until the Fourth of July.

MAMMOTH 2004/05 SEASON SNOWFALL AT A GLANCE:

  • 81 inches of snow fell in October 2004, breaking the previous record of 60 inches (tied between the 1970/71, 1992/93 and 1996/97 seasons).

  • From Dec 26-Jan 12, two winter storms hit California back-to-back and brought approximately 15 feet of snow in two weeks.

  • A March storm hit Mammoth with mid-winter force, dropping over 60 inches of new snow from March 19 through 24th.

  • The 2004/05 season is the second snowiest on record with 607 inches (the record of 617 inches was set during the 1992/93 season).

  • Mammoth has already broken the May snowfall record with 31 inches by May 10.

  • Mammoth's annual snowfall average is 400 inches.
