Russian Skiers Flip for Lake Placid
Lake Placid, NY (Tuesday, July 18, 2006) - When summer hits its stride in Lake Placid, world-class skiers come out and play at the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex and the Kodak Sports Park for Soaring Saturdays and Wet and Wild Wednesdays, respectively.
Ski jumpers, aerial skiers, mogul skiers and freeriders train daily at these sites, operated by the New York Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA). Each week at 1:00 p.m., these young fliers throw down for the masses in competitions and exhibitions.
Week three action, featuring members of the Russian Olympic Freestyle Team, kicks off July 22 when the top eastern jumpers sail from the 90-meter ski jump tower in a king-of-the-hill format. These athletes, aspiring to secure future spots on the United States National Team, make use of Lake Placid's artificial jumping surfaces to emulate winter speeds and distances. It's a summer activity dating back 20 years.
At the adjacent Kodak Sports Park, a 750,000 gallon pool provides the landing surface for Kodak Wet and Wild Wednesdays. Next week's event, July 26, will also present athletes from current training camps. Various kickers will launch the riders up to 60 feet in the air enabling them to execute various spinning and twisting tricks. The pool is aerated with bubbles to cushion the landing.
Each Wednesday, the music rocks, the swag is fly, Lake Placid Idol is hip, the MC hails from across the sea and the atmosphere for everyone is very cool.
Other activities, with an additional charge, include a climbing wall and the virtual reality simulator.
Admission is $12 for adults and $7 for juniors and seniors. This includes the chairlift alongside the ski jump landing hills and the 26-story elevator ride to the top of the 120 meter ski jump tower for unparalleled views of the Adirondack High Peaks.
Kodak Soaring Saturdays are slated for July 22, 29, August 5, 12 and 19, while Kodak Wet and Wild Wednesdays play out on July 26, August 2, 9, 16 and 23.
ORDA also offers the Gold Medal Adventure from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. For $45, participants can try wheeled luge, biathlon, bobsled push start, and trampoline. The price includes a tour of the complex and an athlete meet and greet session. You can register in advance by calling 518-523-2202 at the ski jumps on the day of participation.
