$2,000 Grant for Maine Handicapped Skiing
Ellsworth, ME (Tuesday, August 1, 2006) - Maine Handicapped Skiing (MHS) recently received a $2000 grant from the Western Mountains Fund of the Maine Community Foundation (MCF) to fund the development of a community outreach program to schools and civic, health and veterans groups on the importance of adaptive recreation for adults and children with physical disabilities.
The grant will allow Maine Handicapped Skiing to purchase new equipment to create presentations in a variety of settings throughout Maine.
“Our goal is to train ten MHS participants and ten volunteers to do presentations across the state of Maine,” explained Wendy Iseman, Development and Public Relations Director at MHS. “The personal experiences and challenges of our participants and volunteers tell a wonderful story and now we can help them do that through state of the art audio-visual equipment.”
Maine Handicapped Skiing will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2007. MHS has grown into a year-round adaptive recreation program serving over 290 people with physical disabilities with the help of over 390 volunteers. MHS has maintained its mission of providing free winter lessons in alpine and nordic skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing in the winter and summer lessons in canoeing, kayaking, cycling and golf in the summer.
