Silvaplana, Switzerland – Park City’s McRae Williams, and Gus Kenworthy of Telluride, Colo., scored podium finishes at the final FIS World Cup slopestyle event of the season in Silvaplana on Friday, with second and third-place finishes, respectively. Williams also earned the overall championship with the result, earning the FIS Crystal Globe for slopestyle.
Joining Williams and Kenworthy on the podium was Teal Harle of Canada, who scored his first career World Cup win after landing his signature trick, the intricacies of which are his secret.
“It’s like a double cork 10 but then you block it and land at 900 instead of 1080, so you skip the last 180. I believe it’s the first time that the trick is done in a contest run, it’s a little something that I have that is kind of unique!” said Harle.
Harle’s win comes at a good time in the season, with the World Championships just around the corner. “This gives me a lot of confidence going into Worlds. Now I know I can land my run so hopefully I can keep the momentum going,” Harle added, confiding that he was in the perfect mental space to ski at his best on Friday. “When I feel good and I’m in a good mood, I ski better and have less stress, so I tend to do better on the slopes when I’m having a good time.”
Winning the crystal globe was a career moment for Williams, who held a spot in the top-five on the points list throughout the 2016-2017 season. The second-place finish at Silvaplana combined with his World Cup win at Font Romeu in January was enough to catapult him to the top of the list. It was his fourth career World Cup podium and his first overall win.
For the women, Isabel Atkin of Great Britain won the event, Sweden’s Emma Dahlstrom was second and Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland was third. Sarah Hoefflin of Switzerland was crowned the overall FIS slopestyle champion for the women and awarded the Crystal Globe.
Maggie Voisin, of Whitefish, Mont., led the charge with a fourth-place finish on the day and finishing ninth on the slopestyle points list, the best standing of any American woman. Vermont’s Devin Logan also made the final, finishing fifth.
