Hoping I don’t get screwed again on 3 week and 3 day ski trip where I plan to ski every day. It did not start well.

Our dog woke me up and I let her out once before and once after midnight. I’d gone to bed early as I was planning to get up at 230 but couldn’t get back to sleep so got up and was out of house at 2. Within the first hour of my 522 mile drive left rear tire was losing 1 psi every 10 min. I stopped at gas station where 680 joins I80 and brought it up to 43 psi. Then I stopped at truck stop just after where 505 joins I5 and tire service opened as scheduled at 6 AM. I was napping when manager and employee arrived and turned on some lights by 545. I’d found a screw a little over the one inch (minimum for repair) from sidewall. It was repaired in less than 30 min for $45 (ouch!).

I could have pumped it up to 45 and tried to make in to Americas Tires in Redding that opened at 8 for free repair, but would have (assuming I made it) had same 1 1/2 hr wait for scheduled 8 AM opening as I did a truck stop. Of course it happened on a holiday. I have a repair kit (bought when I found long screw in same tire at Palisades Memorial Day weekend that I had to fixed myself and had professionally re-done when getting tires rotated) but it was pouring rain and I’d rather pay a professional than have problem somewhere else, like a ski area parking lot at end of day or after 3 days at Mustang, on my trip. Shakily hit 13K miles after tire was fixed. I asked repair person to inflate it to 38 like others, but his gauge not the same as mine

Instead of arriving Bachelor before 11, it was 1250 when I parked and 120 when I got in moderate line for Sunrise chair. I won’t ever park there again! Singles line looked long so I joined a couple for what turned out to 30 min (line + lift) to get to top. A young girl apparently lost a ski loading and it took ~10 min to get chair going again. The line built up and then ski school line built up and got priority for a while before they let us who had been waiting in the first row load. I went to Cloudchaser and rode it three times.

Bachelor reported no new snow, but it was cold and snowing hard, and windy on both Clouldchaser and Outback that I would ride later. An inch or two new had fallen that skied well in places and had been scraped off to hard subsurface in others. There were also some thin places where a lot of sun had hit over the last couple of months. I took the long road across to Pine Marten and rode it to Outback.

I never made it as far as Atkeson’s Zoom that Bend friend who had to work recommended as it was groomed and not being skied much. He sent me directions and maps how to get there that I received and did not read while driving. My googles had rimed and it was too cold to take off mittens to try to follow his directions (or to take photos). Hope to do better today.

After two laps on Outback, I had two on Pine Marten (one was to get back to Sunrise) and caught one more ride with some 2” dry powder one Skyline before quitting after 4 with 14K. It was 23F at my car when I left Bachelor where I will return for a little but longer day today. I only counted 10 runs as first one was walk to Sunrise lift.

Even in my younger days I would not remotely consider getting up at 2AM, drive 522 miles and ski that same afternoon. Is there a masochism emoji?

I was not pleased that my legs were still tired Sunday after the 550 mile drive day Saturday. Today will be a very short day at Kicking Horse if I don't feel any better than that. In any case I have to be at Donald airport for the heli flight into Chatter Creek by 2:30.

I’m impressed.
I had myself pegged as a road warrior but to Tseeb I’m a mere amateur.

Worldskitraveller is wimpy compared to Tseeb. Worldskitraveller is riding maybe 10 chairs per day and doing more driving than skiing. Tseeb averages well over 20K per day with an objective of missing no ski days no matter how far apart the ski areas are.

Tseeb is the only retiree I know who does not act like one. While working I was zealous about missing no ski days. That included numerous drive trips to Tahoe and two to Salt Lake for 4 full days of skiing, which can mean post midnight arrival times.

But now I can take a drive day between ski destinations as I have done twice so far on this trip. I can also confine the longer drives to daylight hours. The 4+ hours driving in the light snow yesterday would have been far more difficult after dark.

On Tuesday I mostly skied first but also drove 520 miles; 23 from $49 Bend Motel to Bachelor, then 497 from Bachelor to Metaline, WA where I’m waiting for 8 AM opening of Nelway border crossing to get to Whitewater. I had a nice drive along the Columbia River, then suffered through a few traffic signals getting past Tri-Cities, WA. After Spokane, I drove next to the Pend Oreille River for a long way in the dark which I’d like to repeat in daylight.

Skiing was much better due to more new snow and better and much longer sleep than Sunday night (although I don't like the 13 run count).

I started with a mostly untracked lap on Pine Marten, then moved to Outback getting a little too low after dropping steep untracked between Cinder Cone and Ed's Garden and had to break trail for a couple minutes. I skied Atkeson's Zoom which was recommended by Bend friend as it was groomed and had not been skied much as it required a traverse towards not yet running Northwest. Where you had to turn to Outback.

I went further out my next lap before leaving as chair developed a line.

This is when I went further out on Outback at 10. Should be posted above map, but no time or enough Internet to edit now.

Exiting Outback I took I-84 and caught some of Cinder Cone at 1030. There were many people uphilling in this area and hiking the Cinder Cone.

After skiing to then riding Pine Marten, I skied to and took Skyline which was upgraded from slow 4-passenger to high-speed 6-pack since I was last here 3 years ago. I traversed high above top of Sunrise, caught some untracked into Cloudchaser and lwer down where I also hit a rock hard. Cloud had a moderate line. I went as far to SE as I could skiing a lot of untracked but paid for it with 3 or 4 uphills on the East Catchline. Looking up and down from same place.

I exited Cloudchaser area skiing some lightly tracked shots to Skyline, then did a few more laps on Pine Marten which did not have much of a line.

Yellow Circle I added to above photo is I-84 which gives you some of Cinder Cone with only a very short step-up. Looking up and across it @1255.

I filled up at Bend Costo for $3.19 less 5% cash-back I get from card and Costco, then filled again for $2.85 in Oldtown, ID just over state line from Newport, WA. My less than one year-old SUV got a few red volcanic cinder boogers in OR.

Isn’t Sandpoint in Idaho? 😉 I only crossed into ID to buy gas but was only 30 miles W of Sandpoint. I went N from there and I didn’t have much snow but was concerned about slick road driving along river for miles in the dark.

If I’d left CA much later I could have run into closed I-5 and/or chain checkpoint (which I have) 10 miles N of Redding.

I assume the storm content was driven by altitude and latitude. Sandpoint is about 50 miles below the Canada border and I would guess the rain turned to snow in eastern Washington at similar latitude.
