What to ski at Alta on Feb 8th & 9th

I had to cancel my Utah trip for April as Southwest canceled the evening flights and I didn't want to "commit" to that trip by buying a ticket on Delta. I have finalized an Alta trip with some former coworkers. We will ski on Sat Feb 8th and Sun Feb 9th. My wife and daughter won't be joining so...

    Squaw Valley, CA 1/22/2020

I haven't yet figured out how to track my vertical at Squaw/Alpine. I will ski there 3-4 days more this season. I was also considering an altimeter but not sure if I can get one for < $100 that will be accurate enough to make it worth buying. My best day so far has been 30k vertical lapping...

Beaver Mountain, Utah: Jan. 18-20, 2020

So, what is Pebble creek like? I don't see much info about that area. My wild guess is Beaver Moutain gets more snow than the Park City/Canyons base area as it's 7200' vs. 6300' for Park City. I don't think I saw any Beaver Mountain data in your detailed excel files.

Beaver Mountain, Utah: Jan. 18-20, 2020

A week-long stay with an exchange would probably not be fun for you. The Bear Lake area is very dead in winter. It would be nice to at least have tubing and ice skating, but we couldn't find anything else to do. I prefer booking with my Worldmark credits since I can do shorter stays. I booked a...

Beaver Mountain, Utah: Jan. 18-20, 2020

Beaver Mountain Utah is a small ski resort in Northern Utah that I read about on Pugski and SkiUtah. The mountain has four lifts: Harry's Dream (1600'), Beaver Face (1200'), Marge's Triple (~1300), and Little Beaver (400'). You don't need to walk through a stupid base village, something I...

Mountain High, End of Liz' Ski Season?, Jan. 8, 2020

Sorry to read about Liz's injury. Hope she recovers soon.

Squaw Valley, CA Jan 4, 2020

My first ski day of the season. We went to San Diego over the New Year so we didn't ski until now. This is a brief TR with some pictures. I don't have the expertise to describe snow conditions accurately but I hope pictures will speak for themselves. Some friends were going to Squaw so I tagged...

Where's the best 2019 Christmas snow destination?

My conclusions are not independent from yours since it is based on your data. I just wanted to get a feel for why those recommendations make sense so decided to deep dive into the raw data. I understand now that spring is a better time to ski. I didn't grow up around ski areas so it took me a...

Where's the best 2019 Christmas snow destination?

It's funny that people are commenting about how expensive this trip will be while OP has followed recommended advice of not booking a Xmas trip until conditions are good. I have a feeling that on average, it's better to book a trip in advance to the more reliable destinations to save on flight...

Mt. Rose, NV, Dec. 5, 2019

Mt. Rose is a more expensive place to ski at compared to other independents in Tahoe. Mt. Rose unrestricted season pass is $675. You can get a base Ikon or Epic local pass for a similar price. Homewood, Diamond Peak, Sierra-at-Tahoe are about $400. It's also farther from the Bay...

    Kirkwood, CA 12/14/19

looks incredible. How often have you seen full coverage like this in December? Have you skied Heavenly this season yet?

Mt. Rose, NV, Dec. 5, 2019

Great Report, Tony. I will be at Rose from Dec 21 to 25 as conditions look great.

Are there uncrowded ski areas with on-site lodging?

It seems like this situation is happening right now and Mammoth would be a better choice for a trip next week than Tahoe.

    Snowmaking at Mt. Rose

Interesting. Thanks for putting that marketing hype into perspective. Rose claims the most terrain open in Tahoe right now. I checked open terrain at Squaw, Northstar, Heavenly and all are pretty limited.

    Snowmaking at Mt. Rose

I thought this was interesting. From: https://skirose.com/season-pass-news/ I only plan on skiing on runs with majority natural snow for a few seasons but I'm curious to see how this compares to other resorts like Northstar, Heavenly, Squaw.

    2019-20 Race to Open

I'm following the snowfall in Tahoe from outside the country. It looks like this will be a year where skiing in Tahoe around Xmas might be good. Our plan was to drive to San Diego but we might ski at Mt. Rose instead. Top to bottom is open. Rose has a nice option to upgrade to unrestricted pass...

    Mammoth, CA 11/13-14/19

Understood about WROD. I have not skied one so far and I probably won't do it this year as I'm out of the country till Dec 15th. We will go to Tahoe only after there is enough snow to spread the crowds around.

    Mammoth, CA 11/13-14/19

This TR is interesting to me because tseeb was able to take the shorter route to Mammoth. I'd happily do a trip like this for a weekend as well in future when 2-3 runs are open and you can take the shorter route to Mammoth. Heavenly is not open yet but last year they opened mid-Nov. I think the...

Are there uncrowded ski areas with on-site lodging?

I'm sorry for your loss. Frontier also flies to San Jose but their timings and prices to DEN were never any good for my dates. Far better to redeem Southwest points with their free bags and liberal cancellation policy. Once I forgot to cancel a ticket and I called to get the taxes back, they...

Are there uncrowded ski areas with on-site lodging?

I haven't been to Mammoth, so I'm curious if Mammoth offers any advantage to the the fly-in folks compared to other ski areas. Is the lodging affordable like SLC? Is it uncrowded during the week like the interior NW areas we are discussing here? Does Mammoth offer enough of an advantage over...
