    Plan of attack for Sugarbush

Thanks for the thoughts. I must admit hadn't factored the wind into things - but it's about 9pm here and in the valley it doesn't seem to be blowing too hard so far. But it's also not snowing too hard either - maybe a couple inches on the ground so far, so this may not be too much to get...

    Sugarbush 2/17/09

If what I saw was 50 miles away, then the trails would look to have been about a half-mile across. So maybe it was the avalanche paths, as they did seem really wide. I'll take another look if the sun comes out again.

    Sugarbush 2/17/09

Thanks for the clarification. It looked too close for Whiteface, which must be 30 miles away, maybe? Just guessing from what I remember of driving up to Lake Placid one time.

    Plan of attack for Sugarbush

More of the same this morning at Sugarbush - sunny weather, no wind, perfect temps and high-speed fun on the groomers, which are still in pretty good shape. Now the clouds are building, so hoping snow arrives as forecast. Looking for any ideas from those who know Sugarbush as to the best plan...

    Sugarbush 2/17/09

Up at Sugarbush with the family for the week. Arrived yesterday and was not expecting much, but conditions turned out to be pretty reasonable today, as long as you stuck to the groomers, which everybody seemed to be doing. Started with a few runs on North Lynx to get ski legs back. Cover...

    Alta Lodges

Wanted to collect some opinions from the board on the various Alta lodges. The wife and I have a good chance of being able to pull off a 4-day trip in March, leaving the kids with their grandparents. So we were thinking of spending a bit of cash and soaking in the whole Alta experience by...

    Alta 3/12 and 3/13

Arrived for the family ski-trip to Salt Lake on Tuesday, with wife and our boys, who were playing hookie (the kids, not my wife). Settled in to the Courtyard in Sandy, and were a bit worried by the 70 degrees and sunshine we found in Salt Lake on arrival. But trusted to the advice from the...

Brighton - Great Western Lift area - safe to explore?

No, your reply was definitely not perceived as a flame - it was good, well-considered advice as always and the insight I was looking for (and nearly always get from this board) Agree also with your point about the terrain at Brighton. Maybe we will get up to Alta and Snowbird this year also -...

Brighton - Great Western Lift area - safe to explore?

Admin, your advice is well-taken and I appreciate it. I was sort of trending in that direction anyway. To answer your questions on avi gear – yes we do have it and we’ve practiced plenty, but haven’t taken an avi course yet. I realized once I made the posting that I may be heading for...

Brighton - Great Western Lift area - safe to explore?

Heading back out with the family to Utah next week and psyched to see all the snow out there. Question for any locals - we are looking to explore a little, but will have a short window with the kids in ski-school for a couple of hours in the morning, so need to have a good idea of what we're...

Copper Mountain and Breckenridge, 2/1 and 2/2

Arrived at Copper a little late after taking 3 hours for the drive from Boulder, thanks to several spin-outs on what looked like very tame conditions on I-70 (others not us). We were armed with a 2-for-1 lift ticket secured on Ebay (thanks to Johnnash for the idea). Purchased from the Thrifty...

Loveland or Copper for Friday 2/1

OK, we have a plan. Loveland if it's not windy or cloudy, otherwise we pay the premium for Copper. Thanks so much for all the ideas and the locals feedback.

Loveland or Copper for Friday 2/1

Thanks for the reply - your description and the photo help out a lot. The lack of heavy skier traffic is definitely part of the attraction, but I understand now that long steep shots are not going to be found there. Obvious follow-up question for you and anybody else who knows Loveland is...

Loveland or Copper for Friday 2/1

Thanks for the thoughts, EMSC. We're definitely more of the black diamond types than cornice jumpers. Very comfortable and enjoy exploring places like Copper Bowl, Vail Back Bowls etc. but not looking for the steepest chutes there. Of course, a foot of fresh would be the ideal we're looking...

Loveland or Copper for Friday 2/1

I have Friday and Saturday to ski with my wife in Summit County on the back of a work trip. Will be skiing with friends in Breck on Saturday and staying at Frisco on Friday night. But we are driving up from Denver on Friday morning, so figure it makes sense to look at some of the resorts...

    Sunapee, Jan 1

Just a quick one, because this really doesn't compare much to the macho skiing and pictures from Stowe, MRG etc, but we had a great day-trip with the family up to Sunapee yesterday (and it's all about getting it when you can). The conditions at Sunapee were very, very, very good - super-deep...

Park City and Deer Valley questions

Berkshire - if you do end up going over to Alta for a couple of days, then the Salt Lake Super Pass might work for you as well - $106 for adults for two days. Hey tseeb - thanks for the heads-up on the 5th Grade Passport. My son is in 5th grade and we are heading out there for 4 days in...

Hotel for one night in CO

Thanks for the thoughts. We're on the red-eye at 11pm back to Boston on Saturday night, so we don't have to be too close to Denver. Was thinking Copper for Saturday maybe, or perhaps even going on to Vail or Breck. But Winter Park is another good alternative and we also thought about A-Basin...

Hotel for one night in CO

Wife and I have managed to tag a couple of days onto a work trip at the end of Jan. Will be skiing somewhere close to Denver on Friday (maybe Loveland) and then need a hotel for just one night on Friday, before another day skiing someplace else on Saturday, depending on conditions and crowds...

Ascutney 12-18 - scratchy but so empty

I would agree. The difference in snow conditions seems remarkable. You can see Killington from Ascutney and I would guess that they are maybe 15 miles apart as the crow flies, but if you compare my report with PFunk's from the same day "No windloading, pure powder on one of the longest...
