    Wasatch weather question

The term also can be used to describe the Baldy Shoulder when coated with gray dust from the Avy charges

OB Avi death Near Ouray, CO?

I have been skiing around SW Colorado this week. Monday: Telluride. Fluffy boot deep powder in the alpine areas/ hiked Palmyra Peak and had both face shots and core shots. The lower mountain steeps are rocky as usual. Tuesday: Battleship slide path on the Silverton side of Red Mountain...

    Snowbird 2/3/10

Hi Marc, Found the maps. Look for you in the GMD in the AM (if I don't go BCC backcountry with WMC instead). I could send them to you? Skied the Canyons with VT friends on Wednesday and took the same wrong turn down Deschutes. They didn't seem to notice that something was wrong.

    Alta, UT 1/25/10

Don't worry about the crowds, Powderqueen. They were as bad as the snow has been good. It is statistically unlikely that the snow will be as good during your visit. Hence, the crowds should be more manageable.

    Snowbird/Alta 1/24

Mostly a log of how we got up today: 7:30: Drove to my friend Steve's house right at mouth of LCC. 9:15: Got into the canyon but came to a stop about a mile up. 9:35 Started to move/ came to a stop at 10:00 between Entry 1 and 2. 10:00 Called Alta phone/ heard the road open at 11:00/ area...

Put my 1/23 post under the 1/22 thread. Was able to drive right up. Of course it was a bit earlier...

    Alta January 22

I was thinking that it would be. Got up at 5, left Sugar House at 5:15, and was at GMD by 5:50. Road closed at 6, interlodge at 6:45. Rested on the sofa (earplugs a great help). Ate breakfast at about 8 (more than 100 breakfast orders from the other early risers). Interlodge was lifted at...

    Alta January 22

Hope so. I have the feeling it will be an adventure getting there and back tomorrow.

    Alta January 22

Denser snow today but plenty of it. The past few days have definitely put Alta over the top. All the traverses are great. And if you like to ski the runs as well, they are also great. Expected Canyon opening was 8:30 this morning. In fact, it opened at 8:15. By the tie I ws driving up at...

I was thinking of writing my post for tomorrow before I go skiing. I have a pretty good idea what it will be like already...

    Alta January 21

For the third consecutive day, the best day of the season. 14" with no crowd. Everything was deep for the first few hours/ after the trackage had occurred, winds transported snow onto the West Rustler chutes that drop off the High T. This meant soft surfaces all the way until closing time...

    Alta January 20

3" overnight and few more in the morning reset things nicely. The low overnight total kept the rabble away, leaving soft turns everywhere. Backside opened around 12:30; a line up of around 75 was waiting at the High Notch gate. I was probably about 40th; passed on Yellow Trail as it had a...

    Alta January 19

Marc, Maybe you should plan to take a day off after Tony Crocker visits. If he gets only 55% of expected snowfall (as posted on an earlier string) then shouldn't regression to the mean increase your odds of scoring a powder day after he leaves?

    Alta January 19

"Only" 6" overnight on top of the three from yesterday but it snowed furiously from 6:00 to about 11" and by the the time it cleared off around lunch it was classic Alta deep. Early laps were on the frontside to maximize powder vertical: Racecourse, Sunspot, Lone Pine. Then flipped over to...

    Skiing around Utah 1/9-17/2010

Today was good/ lots of Backsides and Thirds. Could always feel the bottom but it was a smooth bottom and the powder was deep enough so that you couldn't see your skis in places with wind deposition.

    Colorado lift ticket prices!!!

Hey Marc, The bargaining thing was meant as a joke (as was the IPhone app about terrain openings). And the Black Diamond link shows that the "A" list resorts price in a very narrow range. What Echo Park charges is irrelevant.

    My big West trip

Quick thoughts: Dead Horse has limited hiking/ Arches has lots of short an interesting hikes. Arches makes a better day of it. I agree that you need a separate trip to see southern Utah. A quick fix without going out of your way is a drive up to the plateau in the Colorado National Monument...

    Colorado lift ticket prices!!!

Has anybody looked into whether Colorado ski areas are colluding to set ticket prices? Has anybody ever tried bargaining at the ticket window? Clearly frozen granular is worth less than packed powder (Crystal and Bachelor seem to get this).

    Colorado lift ticket prices!!!

Though it is important to note that due to the arcane Utah liquor laws, a bottle of champagne is not included in the AltaBird ticket price.
