    Crater Lake Circumnavigation

Nice pictures; looks like an adventure! I'm wondering if putting on the skins might have helped prevent breaking through the crust, since you wouldn't have needed to push down to set the skis as you have to in order to get the scales to grip the snow?

    The new skis finally arrived!

For those of us who tip the scales a little harder, the Salomon Guardian 16's, though not light, look to be an instant contender for best all around in-bounds and out of bounds bindings when they start selling them in the fall of 2012: http://www.firsttracksonline.com/2012/0 ... an-review/...

    AltaBird, UT 2/4/12

One of my friends has been living in So. CA for 3 or 4 years now after growing up back east, but he still seems to handle the cold pretty well. He attributes it to spending a lot of time hanging out apres ski in cold ski towns. He also wears a Seirus face mask nearly every time he skis, even on...

    Upcoming SLC trip 2/9-13/2012

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make this trip after all, due to recent physical symptoms (headaches, swollen eyelids and sores above and around my right eye) which turned out to be evidence of Shingles. I'm feeling better than I was, but the swelling is still there, as are the sores, so I...

    Upcoming SLC trip 2/9-13/2012

I'm flying into SLC midday Thurs., 2/9/2012 for a few days of skiing. I plan to ski one of the Park City resorts Thurs. afternoon (Using Quick Start Promo): http://www.visitparkcity.com/visitors/s ... ick-start/ The weather forecast is a little dicey at this pt. (above avg. Temps, below avg...

Why the South West is So Dry - Bad Karma

Looks like only that local from June Lake was expecting a huge winter, and his source didn't check out. Most of the real experts weren't expecting above normal precipitation, per that article.

    $18.99/day Mt. Baldy Lift Tickets

Limited time offer, requires online registration the day before use: http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php ... qxhha5jjew They were a little cheaper last year; I got in 3 powder days at Baldy for a total of $45.

    RIP Jamie Pierre

I wonder how much of the irresponsible behavior on Sunday was due to the fact that people were skiing in a normally in-bounds area and were not seeing it as a backcountry excursion requiring heightened awareness and caution.

Baldy TR Monday March 21 -- March Madness

I made it up to the parking lot at about 9 AM on Mon. The ticket line was about 45 min. long, but there was no line for Chair 1. I hit Bentley's on my first run. The snow was a little dense, but not at all wet and coverage was good. I traversed a little too high, though, and hit some rocks in...

Baldy Season Passes 2011-2012 Now Avail

If this forecast plays out, looks like Monday will be a good day to give Baldy a shot: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... tType=text I'll be up there if the storm lives up to its billing. I'll have a Grey Giro helmet and a large green fanny pack. -Roy

Baldy Season Passes 2011-2012 Now Avail

Good point, Tony, I've gotten burned that way before, although not this year. I've noticed that they have gotten operational faster this year on stormy days. Perhaps once more Baldy regulars catch on to this improvement I'll have more competition on stormy days.

Baldy Season Passes 2011-2012 Now Avail

My workaround plan has been to go to Baldy on the day the storm is scheduled to end (not the day after it actually does end). I've had to put on chains and deal with wind and limited visibility at times, but short to no lines and fresh powder have made it worthwhile. I went on Mon., Jan 3rd and...

Mt Waterman 2-27-11 Powder and Pictures

I was raised in Northern New York State, in an area that got lake effect storms off from Lake Ontario. To me one difference between driving back there and driving up Mt. Baldy road after a storm is that most snowplows back home used to spread sand at the same time as they plowed the road. On Mt...

    Baldy TR, Sunday, Feb 27th

I was up there on Saturday, and there was plenty of coverage to ski chair 1. There's never really a guarantee of no base risk at Baldy, IMO, because there are so many underlying rocks, boulders, fallen trees, etc. It's about as good as it ever gets now, as long as you avoid windstripped areas...

Mt. Baldy 2/26/2011 w/link to pics

The weather forecast for Friday and Saturday was strangely similar to last week's, but this week the storm lived up to it's billing, at least the Friday night/Saturday morning portion. There was snow falling (and on the ground) below the tunnels. Mt. Baldy village had a significant amount of...
