    U.S. Presidency #47

David Brooks was not on PBS tonight, but he was described as "being away this week," not leaving the show.

It's a mix. Hokkaido with its volcanoes feels like the PNW. The Japan Alps are western type mountains but the ski areas near them in Hakuba have lifts no more than 1,000 feet into the alpine. Niseko and Hakuba, where most of my skiing has been, are more western in ambience because of their...

strictly for family reasons, but I'd expect more Northeast ski days from him this season given the excellent conditions.

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

Does MRG have any high speed runs? I recall a couple of narrow twisty groomers and as many mogul runs as I ever ski in a day. The moguls were a workout but fun as it was 60F T-shirt skiing like a Memorial Day at Mammoth. I do not see any commentary from Project101 about today's skiing yet.

Tomorrow I will have a month end roundup of season to date totals. Remember to multiply that Jay number by 90%, but it's still probably #1. Revelstoke may be reporting more, but Revy's snow plot is at 6,429 feet within a ski area range of 1,680 - 7,300. Revelstoke has had a ton of rain...

    Alpental, January 9, 2026

If conditions remain as they are, I will not ski in Washington or Oregon at all. I'm almost surely spending the week of Feb. 9-13 in the Sierra. After that I may just try to get to Canada as fast as I can in 2-3 days. Not only do the higher Sierra areas preserve snow better during the...

You're lucky there's way more snowmaking in Austria, because it's the Alps analogy this season to Colorado in the American West. James also has the option of some Austrian glacier resorts on Indy Pass, plus Kühtai has a base elevation of 2,000 meters.

Those southern Alps larch forests are the only places it's any good. Liz and I scored some of it in Sauze d'Oulx. The snow was old by the time we got to Serre Chevalier but we could tell it would be promising, especially the far western sector below Bachas. We all liked Serre Chevalier in...

Yes I could navigate those on my own and we did on the day after being guided. That has glacial features. You have to know the section to be skiing hard skier's right to avoid them. Not sure I would try that 7 years later. Ah, the unofficial guide explains Steinberg and why you're...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

Another new one for Worldwide Ski Map. In North America former admin's intent was to find every functioning ski area. Cross checking Stuart's database would be the best way to complete that part. James and Patrick have provided a few historical significant defunct areas, which are labelled...

Mt. Bachelor is a good analogy to Niseko in scale and pitch but has more above tree line. The NY places look visually similar as like most Japanese ski areas, they are completely below tree line. But Bohemia and Japan are steeper than upstate NY. I measured Bohemia with the Google Earth...

Sbooker is in full-on James mode. I thought that's where sbooker was yesterday because the town of Yomase is near the base of Ryuoo Snow Park. But today I notice Yomase Onsen ski area across the valley from Ryuoo. Then I notice Makinoiri Kogen on the north side of the mountain where...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

The one thing 99% of avid skiers with diverse models agree on is the value of powder days. Project101 appears to be the exception. Today he duplicated his Laurentian exercise from 2019, hitting 5 areas: 2026-01-29Ragged Mountain🇺🇸 New Hampshire 2026-01-29Pat's Peak🇺🇸 New Hampshire...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

Liz and I are certainly in that camp. Patrick too, within his time-of-year constraints. There are tons of skiers who like Harvey limit themselves to one or a handful of areas within drive distance of home. SoCal's population of Mammoth only skiers is one of the largest subsets of that...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Big Sky is certainly low tide with reported 29 inch base depth, but it's 83% open including maybe half the Lone Peak runs. Most people will need some Ptex after they ski up there.

I think everyone on this thread would say that. Liz summed it up best: "How to take the joy out of skiing."

Not in my case next August. The cash price for the flight home from Madrid was twice the price of the incoming to Bilbao. And how did you not pay bag fees using basic economy? The comparative fine print always mentions things like no mileage credit, no seat assignment etc. Does the credit...
