Lindsey Vonn: St. Moritz FIS Downhill Win!

I watched the replay on YouTube. Fantastic run and she looked great skiing. Quite amazing considering her age (41) and the fact she has been out of competitive ski racing for 5 years and has had numerous surgeries, including a complete re-build of her knee. It would be unbelievable if she could...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

What brand of heated gloves do you own? As I have gotten older, my hands (fingers, especially) get cold much faster and I'm considering buyting heated gloves (I don't like mittens). I've read reviews of many different gloves but it seems like there are always mixed reviews on almost all of the...

    Northern VT: what a start

Quite a bit of natural snow in northern VT and Quebec. Very localized but a good start to the season, so far.

    Northern VT: what a start

As someone who has, more or less, given up on skiing in the Northeast, I (sort of) hope for an easy, warmer, and snowless Winter. I know that is sacrilege on this board but it's how I feel.

    Northern VT: what a start

ALWAYS a risk in the Northeast. Cold and snow this early in the season is often a cruel tease and, many times, the weather pattern changes, and warmer temps and rain appear. I sort of hope so - I did not finish my Fall clean-up, thinking that I would still have time, based on past years. My bad.

    Northern VT: what a start

The longer range forecast for the Northeast looks quite cold through X-Mas. No major warm-up/rain storms predicted, so we'll see if that holds. It's already quite good in southern NE (not as good as northern VT, though). We had about 5-6 inches in the last snow storm and it has been very cold...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Grand Targhee is looking very lean, down at the base. Just a light dusting of snow on the lower trails. Ugh.

    U.S. Presidency #47

Yes, Tony, I would totally support this plan but I would say there is a 0.00000000000000000% chance that it will ever happen. Reminds me of what Warren Buffett once suggested about how to end deficit spending in the USA: Warren Buffett has said: "I could end the deficit in five minutes. You...

    DFU Zone

I had a classmate in high school who was skiing the Big Couloir at Big Sky several years ago (he may have been in his 50's at the time) and he took a bad fall. Ended up in the hospital for 3 or 4 months, with all sorts of broken bones and other medical problems (and he's an MD). I believe he has...

    Grand Targhee

From the webcams, it looks like GT has gotten enough snow in the past few days, so that some people are skinning up and skiing back down. It does look a little thin in places, thought.

    East Village at Deer Valley

LOL, well, Tony, give a real estate developer money (or access to credit) and they will, pretty much, build anything anywhere. I believe the son of one of our neighbors is somehow involved in this new development.

    New England/Northeast Foliage Reports

This is my memory, too, Tony, backed up by your stats above. Last Fall was dry and this year too (so far) but I don't remember it being unusually dry in previous years in the Fall. This just proves my thesis that the weather in New England can be extremely variable (hence, the famous quote from...

    New England/Northeast Foliage Reports

Yes, so true, and, hence, the numerous forest fires throughout the Northeast last Fall. I never remember forest fires being an issue in New England before.

    New England/Northeast Foliage Reports

Yes, it has been a disappointing "leaf peeping" season (in terms of color) throughout almost all of New England this year. Some people are blaming the prolonged drought afflicting almost all of the Northeast., plus we had a very mild September. The colors, especially on the Sugar Maples, are...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Yea, I live in the Berkshires of western Mass and it has been a fairly severe drought around here. The local rivers and streams are the lowest I have seen in 35 years. Almost frighteningly low. I haven't heard anything about ski areas being worried about lack of water to make snow but it...

    Skiing Arrangements With Spouses/Significant Others

LOL, Tony, yes, she is still working full-time BUT any resentment she might have about my taking a ski vacation alone is FAR EXCEEDED by her happiness at getting me out of the house for a week or so. As I mentioned above, she has offered to pay for my ski trip, as an inducement to get me to go. LOL.

    Skiing Arrangements With Spouses/Significant Others

LOL, my wife is paying for me to go skiing with my daughter to Banff/Lake Louise and Sunshine Village next February! She LITERALLY can't wait to get me out of the house. She's already looking forward to it and the trip is not for another four months. Heck, if I want to be mercenary, I'm sure I...

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

See above reply, Tony. I do worry a little about very cold temps, even later in February.

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

Yea, I've already talked to my daughter about this. I am somewhat worried about hitting a very cold spell, even in late February/early March, when we will be there. As I've gotten older, I don't tolerate really cold temps as well as I did when I was younger (my fingers especially); I'm actually...

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. So far, the only item reserved is the hotel Elk and Avenue in Banff. Looks fairly nice. See link below. I'm not sure if we have the option to cancel if something else looks better? Probably the next step is to make airline reservations. I can't fly...
