    Season Plans: 2022-23

https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/thousands-of-records-shattered-in-historic-winter-warm-spell-in-europe/ar-AA15TT83 A story today about the record warmth across much of Europe. Not sure how this is affecting ski conditions throughout much of the Alps?

    Hunter Mountain - 12/21/22

Yea, Chris, no doubt the tragedy of NE skiing. And I don't know if it is climate change or global warming, but it seems like we are getting more and more warm spells and more and more rain events, with each succeeding "Winter" in the Northeast. It's just one reason I would never want to own or...

    Hunter Mountain - 12/21/22

Yea, EMSC, definitely a "Hun'tah" element there (when my daughter and I pulled into the parking lot in the morning, someone in a Porsche SUV was doing "donuts" in the parking lot. Huh?). No, Tony, I do not have an Epic pass. It cost me $78 (as a senior) to ski today. If I had bought the ticket...

    Hunter Mountain - 12/21/22

Skied Hunter Mountain in New York today (12/21/22) with my daughter. Unlike the Berkshires about 60 miles to the East, where I live, Hunter and the other ski areas in the Catskills, got 12-18 inches of snow from the storm last weekend (it was 35 degrees and raining in the Berkshires) and it was...

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

Looks like Targhee is now almost 100% open (94 of 95 trails) and JH looks to be about 70-75% open. Been a good start to the early season in the northern Rockies. Big Sky does not seem to have as much terrain open.

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

Just looked at the webcams for Grand Targhee. Looks like the middle of winter there already.

Mont Glen (Eastern Townships), QC will reopen in 2008-09

My daughter lives in Montreal (grad student at McGill), is an avid skier, and buys one of those cheap season passes to Bromont. I may drive up this winter for a weekend of skiing with her at Bromont. Is it worth the 4.5 hour drive to ski there (Patrick)?

    Bejing Winter Games Aesthetics

See story below on the snowmaking setup for these Olympics: https://time.com/6146039/artificial-snow-2022-olympics-beijing/ Apparently, the snow guns that the Chinese are using were bought from an Italian company (but it doesn't say whether Italian personnel were responsible for actually...

    Bejing Winter Games Aesthetics

From what I have heard and read, some of the racers have complained about the snow conditions on the race courses and other racers seem to be OK with it. I believe, on many of the World Cup race courses, they "inject" water on to the courses to "firm them up" and many racers like skiing on those...

    Bejing Winter Games Aesthetics

Yea, very ugly. As I mentioned previously in this thread, it looks to me that they must have done a tremendous amount of "earth moving" to create those "trails" on the mountains. It does not look like "natural terrain" to me?

    Bejing Winter Games Aesthetics

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I've watched quite a bit of the Olympics (and not really proud of that fact, given the games are being held in what I consider to be a repressive and horrible communist country - I'm not sure why the International Olympic Committee would ever agree to hold...

Vail Resorts Red Flags in 2021-22

LOL, that is from an ad that has been playing during the Olympics TV coverage (I forget what the commercial is about or the company involved) but I assume it is somehow photoshopped or otherwise computer manipulated. If not, the ad agency got a HUGE number of people to ski down that slope.

Vail Resorts Red Flags in 2021-22

New story in last Sunday's NY Times (02/06/22) about the issues at various ski resorts resulting from the multi-area ski passes (Epic and Ikon, etc). https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/05/style/vail-ski-resorts-crowds.html

    Plattekill, NY: 01/22/22

I skied yesterday (02/02/22) at my local "mountain". Was better than I was expecting. I had skied about 3 weeks ago and it was terrible - maybe half the trails open and very crusty and icy on the open trails. But yesterday was much better. We have had two weeks of very cold weather (many nights...

    UT: AltaBird 2021-01-19 & 20

I follow the publicly-traded stock of Vail Resorts (symbol: MTN) and the stock price has recently hit an all-time high (although has sold off slightly in the last week or so) and has more than doubled in price from the lows in March of 2020. I realize Vail owns ski resorts all over the country...
