    UT: AltaBird 2021-01-19 & 20

Ugh! Thanks for the update. Does NOT sound good. I know it has been a lean snow year in much of the Rocky Mountain west. Unfortunately, according to Weather.com, they're predicting that both February and March will be warmer and dryer across most of the country, including ski country...

    NZ and Oz - 2020.

I'm not a medical expert but I guess the question I would have is: how does any one region or country know, for sure, that every single person in that region or country does not have the virus? Yea, I realize you can test people but there are false negatives with some of the tests AND it seems...

    Grand Targhee

JH has now opened the tram (but with limited capacity). Not sure how much of the "tram terrain" will be open right away but they are getting heavy snow today and, from the webcams (not always a good indicator, I know), it looks like, more or less, mid-Winter conditions. With Targhee almost 100%...

    Vail/BC/Breck/Heavenly now full

I looked at the web cams this morning for Jackson Hole. It seems to be the first time that there are sizeable lift lines for a couple of the lifts that leave from the base area. It's hard to tell exactly how far apart people are but it doesn't really look to me to be 6 feet (in a lot of cases)...

Re: For what it is worth?

LOL, sorry, NOT my intention. Just linking (what I think are) relevant stories. I admit I read TOO much.

    Grand Targhee

GT has now opened all their lifts and is reporting 94 of 97 trails open - almost 100% of their skiable terrain. I'm sure there are some thin spots and sketchy areas but they may have the most open terrain of any area in the US?

    Mammoth, Dec. 2, 2020

[/b] Yea, I'm a big believer in wearing a helmet (and I have been doing so for at least 15 years) but there is some statistical evidence that it may not really prevent serious head injuries among the skiing population: https://www.vpr.org/post/dartmouth-hitc ... s#stream/0...

2020 Eclipse Success Despite United Airlines/Air Canada

Thanks for your explanation, Tony. It certainly sounds like you have taken every precaution possible to avoid infection from Covid on the plane, airport, etc. and on the trip itself. I hope it goes well and you avoid getting sick and you have clear skies for the eclipse! Interesting story today...

2020 Eclipse Success Despite United Airlines/Air Canada

Yea, it's none of my business and, Tony, I admire and respect your passion and interest in eclipses, but I have to echo Jason above. I DEFINITELY would not be travelling in an enclosed metal tube for 10 to 15 hours (what is total round-trip time in airplanes from LA to South America, plus time...

    Grand Targhee

GT opened today! They're reporting 58 of 97 trails open with variable, early season conditions (I don't know what percentage of skiable terrain that represents). From the web cams, the base area looks to be quite crowded (I believe you had to pre-reserve your tickets). Interesting, I looked at...

    Grand Targhee

Another 17" in the past 24 hours at GT. They're now reporting a 42" base. Opening on 11/20/20. It'll be interesting to see how much of the mountain that they open on that day. From their webcams this morning, looks almost like mid-Winter (but not always an accurate picture, I know). Lots of...

    Grand Targhee

Snowing heavily at Grand Targhee today (11/10/20). Already looks like fairly good coverage down to the base. From what I can see on the web cams, people are skinning up the trails and skiing down.

    2019-20 Season Recap

[/b] I'm on the board of a non-profit land conservancy organization and we decided to keep almost all of our hiking trails open, right from the onset of the pandemic in March while most other similar organizations decided to close their hiking trails. I think we made the right decision (even...

    The big Corona Virus Shutdown

I read today an analysis that came to the same conclusion. Based on DNA testing, the researchers believed that most of the east coast (and NYC) Covid-19 cases originated from infected travellers coming from Europe (I'm too lazy to find the link right now to this story). There was the famous (or...
