    Grand Targhee, Feb. 5, 2022

Bummer it was flat light/overcast. There's been a good amount of sun the last couple weeks across much of the region. I didn't even know there was a 3rd lot either. During my season there in 2014/15, I don't think I ever parked anywhere but the top lot. I also remember tickets being around $70...

Jackson Hole, WY, Feb. 2, 2022

I've had crappy snow in late January at JH several times. Even the low sun angle can still wreck that SE facing part of mountain if there is no inversion, or you're above it.

    Snowbird Off-Groom Geezer Style 27 Jan 2022

Great photos/report but that sure doesn't look like fun to me. Of course, I'm a boarder so it's never much fun off piste unless it powder-esque. ;) The dry period after a great December is quite persistent. Long range models continue to show little to nothing for quite some time for most of the...

Vail Resorts Red Flags in 2021-22

Remember when it used to be a privilege to work at a ski resort? My, how times have changed.

Mt. High, CA, January 6, 2022

ah, the good ole snowplayers. Probably the main reason I left the Forest Service at Big Pines/Wrightwood. Just pure stupidity/madness. Good to see Mt. High East finally open. It was my saving grace during the first few winters in Wrightwood, as it's the best, long groomers in Socal...

Revelstoke Myth - more locals than: Vail, Aspen, Park City - Lots of Liftlines

Interesting, as just about a month ago I was looking into Revelstoke for a trip, and the more I got into it, the more it looked like a nightmare, especially being a boarder. I was also interested to see the larger population, but the town infrastructure looked more like for a couple thousand.

    Conversion from phpBB to Xenforo

Nice job transferring stuff over, Tony. I enjoy the periodic conversations here, and even though I don't do trip reports anymore, i still enjoy others. At some point, I might try and do a few more again, just not really into the whole photobucket thing, or whatever it is that hosts images these...

    Snowbasin, UT 03/30/09

When I worked at Copper in 97/98, Club Med was still there. They had some good parties, but it always bugged the crap out of me that many of their snowboard instructors taught classes using ski poles for everyone. Most of us at Copper ski/board skool used to make fun of them pretty regularly.

Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole Christmas Lodging options

Glad you enjoyed Targhee. As I mentioned above, the visitor numbers have been increasing quite significantly over the past few years, but in comparison to Jackson Hole, it probably does still have a low key vibe. While I only lived in Alta, WY for a year, I feel the foggy/cloudy/low vis...

    Sierra-at-Tahoe & Caldor Fire

yeah, unfortunately it usually like that. If one side of the country is very wet, the other is very dry...generally the same story for temps. I also see the remnants of Nora are giving a nice soaking to the 4 corners area, too. Thankfully for them, the summer monsoon has been a good one this...

    Sierra-at-Tahoe & Caldor Fire

It is tragic. I hope they are able to save the towns/ski areas in its path. The enormity of forest fires in the last 20-ish years is just astounding to me. (And I worked for 13 years with the USFS, and was exposed to many fires during that time).

Red Lodge, MT: March 19, 2021

another great report, thank you. I've been to Red Lodge in the summer, and it is indeed a great little town. I've heard about the inconsistent/variable snow issues, but didn't know about the HSQ debacle. What a mess, and quite unfortunate.

Discovery Basin, MT: March 16, 2021

Nice report! Discovery is owned by the same family that own Wolf Creek (Pitchers). After riding at Discovery a few times, and several years later having 3 seasons at Wolf Creek, I can say that they are not the brightest people at operating ski areas, IMO. The Silver Chief chair at Disco and the...

Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole Christmas Lodging options

Ha...understood, but according to the post in April, it's supposedly starting this summer. EDIT: It HAS started per their FB page. The installation of the list bases will be done this summer, and the remaining chairlift stuff next summer, etc.. and will be ready for 21/22 opening.

Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole Christmas Lodging options

Skier visits are way up at Targhee the last few years, so don't expect it to be like it used to with no lift lines, etc. The most plausible reason is the addition to GT being part of the Mountain Collective, but also the Ikon Pass addition for Jackson Hole undoubtedly brought more skiers to the...

Angeles Crest after Bobcat Fire, May 21 & June 10, 2021

With all the fires since I left, the Angeles is a totally different place than when I lived/worked there. It's only a matter of time before the remaining coniferous forest towards Wrightwood will burn. I fear when it does it'll be quite tragic, too. The one thing that has kept it safe all...

Big Sky Implements Surcharge For Lone Peak Tram

I also was not terribly impressed with Big Sky when I was there in 2011,(I think) but it was so uncrowded, it made it much more tolerable. I actually liked the terrain at Moonlight a little better, although conditions over there were not good. I didn't get to go up the tram because of weather...

Lookout Pass, ID: March 15, 2021

Wallace is a fun town, although it was pretty closed up when I was there a couple weeks before you. I'm sure between Covid/shoulder season was the cause. Summer is quite busy when I've been there, and as you mentioned the Hiawatha trail is a big draw. I also rode Lookout while I was there...

    49 Degrees North, WA: March 13, 2021

Some good thoughts, TonyC. As you know, my wife and I have been bouncing around the west the last 10 yrs trying on places to see where we want to live, long term. Winter sun ended up being one of the biggest priorities, but trying find a good balance of sun and snow was a challenge. I also don't...
