    LA Fires: Jan 2025

Yea, my late father, when he traveled, would never stay above the second floor of a hotel (especially if it was an older wooden hotel), just in case a fire broke out and he had to jump out the window.

    Harv's NY/VT Pictures Thread

This makes sense, Tony, for your purposes. And snowfall amounts can vary widely across the Northeast, with, usually, going farther north results in more natural snow. But I've had some very good local ski days when, even a smallish (3 to 6 inches) new natural snowfall, on top of a manmade base...

    Harv's NY/VT Pictures Thread

Frankly, in the part of New England where I live, it has been a terrible winter so far, in terms of snowfall. We had one minor storm in mid-December with, maybe, 4 to 5 inches of snow but that lasted for only a week or so and then we had some mild weather (in the mid-50's (F) along with a lot of...

Park City and Deer Valley look miserable over the holidays

I taught at my local ski hill for several years. I used to get a free season pass and I would get a 25% discount in the cafeteria and ski shop. I can't remember if any family members got discounted season passes but I don't think so. At the time (and this was maybe 8 to 10 years ago), I was...

    Age 70 ski free

One of our neighbors who skis quite often at Alta/Snowbird said you can ski for free at Alta after age 80. Is this true?

Park City and Deer Valley look miserable over the holidays

I ain't paying $300 a day to ski ANYWHERE! Heck, I would say $200 (or even lower) is the tipping point for me and, I would assume, many other skiers. Obviously, though, a ploy by the big ski area owners to get people to pony up the money at the beginning of the season for one of the super passes...

Park City and Deer Valley look miserable over the holidays

Totally agree here, Chris. But, at least for me, it is getting harder and harder to see my "doctor" (you know, the person who went to an accredited medical school in the USA and passed the various exams to have the letters "M.D." after their name). Now, if I am feeling sick or think I may need...

No need to explain, SandGNut. There could be worse fates than having to ski in St. Moritz in January.

Development and Strategies at Feeder Ski Resorts

Yea, EMSC, the email I received from Ski Butternut just said the new lift is costing "millions". It is about 3,600 feet long (linear) and will rise about 750 vertical feet. It's a much needed improvement as it feeds into some of the best terrain on the mountain (IMHO) and the old lift (although...

Development and Strategies at Feeder Ski Resorts

Yea, Tony, I have been (half-jokingly) saying this about my local ski hill in western Mass for several years now. It's been owned since opening in 1964 by the same family but (I don't think) they have the capital to really make any substantial improvements to the ski area (although I just got an...

Another 13" in the last 24 hours at Targhee (and JH too), with snow in the forecast every day for the next five days. The rich get richer.

Snowing again this morning at Targhee, although only light accumulation is expected.

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Yea, Tony, the weather has been crazy. Was -5 (F) here four or five days ago (some pipes froze in our house but, luckily, did not burst but we had no running water in an upstairs bathroom for about 12 hours) and then it was 55 degrees here yesterday, with heavy rain the previous day. The warm...

Interesting Article on the Cost per Day of US Skiing

Yea, this was almost the worst case scenario, in terms of cost. No doubt you can ski far cheaper per skier day, at many resorts around the country.

Interesting Article on the Cost per Day of US Skiing

LOL, just proof of my thesis that skiing has, essentially, become an upper middle class (or really upper, upper middle class) sport. Admittedly, I'm sure this story overstates how expensive it can be (and even at those places, you can spend less money than what they show) but, if you're a family...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

A mention of my local ski hill (or "bump" if you prefer that description)! I agree with everything you say about skiing in the Northeast, although I HATE skiing through snowmaking guns when they're on because they are not making "snow" but rather frozen ice particles that makes if feel like your...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Yea, Tony, the long term statistics may not back this up but, anecdotally and from my (sometimes faulty) memory, it just seems like we don't get as much snow and cold weather, at least in southern to central New England as we used to and I've lived here for 60 plus years.

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Not much natural snow in the Northeast but very good snow making weather. Was 5 degrees this morning at my house, with low humidity. Stowe is reporting 93 of 129 trails open. Rain and warm weather will hurt some but it's the new reality that ski areas have to deal with.
