Mt. Baldy, CA, Feb. 27, 2023

agree, that doesn't look like much fun, but again... good effort! again, to make this post about me... My biggest nightmare at Baldy was the 2001 storms... got caught too low in South Bowl and had to huff it back up the canyon in 4+ feet of snow. Thankfully, I knew where I was and didn't follow...

    Mount Bachelor, OR 2/25-28/23

Looks fun. I'm planning on being there next week. It'll be midweek, so hopefully NW will be running fast. Even though its a HSQ, that lift is long enough without slowing down. Bachelor is one of the few places I actually prefer a sunny groomer day over powder/stormy...

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Mt High will likely open tomorrow, as they are just about done clearing the highway today according to my friend in Wrightwood. A lot less higher elevations to clear than the other ski areas. I'd be shocked if Waterman opened before next weekend, as that section of Hwy 2 has always been a low...

    49 Degrees North, WA 2/24/23

Looks like some fun groomers! 49 is on my list for maybe next year as I'll probably get the Indy Pass add-on again, even though the price is going to be 220 (up from 199 this year). The new HSQ makes it much more desirable, too.

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Interesting, Snow-forecast. com has always been on the low end for my area. Goes to show that all models these people use are different, and not a good fit for mass forecasting. I will say that Opensnow did seem to have some better forecasters in certain areas. I know when I lived in Pagosa...

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

From the NWS-LA 5 AM discussion: "... Storm totals will likely range from 2 to 5 inches across the coast and valley up to 4 to 8 inches in the mountains with local amounts up to 12 inches".

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Fwiw, Brundage Mtn (and probably many other ski areas that got sucked into their marketing) shows Opensnow's daily snowfall for up to 5 days out, and numbers are still usually quite overblown for the areas I'm arguing. (I failed to mention that I also looked at that when I mentioned the 1-5 and...

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Maybe, however when I lived in Pagosa there was not a dedicated snowfall forecaster for the SW CO/NM area. Idaho has Steve S. A good guy with a great background in the outdoors/journalism... but hardly a forecaster.

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Probably not a popular opinion around here, but Opensnow has grossly overforecasted (wet bias) snowfall amounts for my area the 3 years I've been here in ID. It was a similar situation for Wolf Creek when I lived in Pagosa (although, not nearly as bad as it is now), which my meteorologist friend...

    Historic Mt. Baldy Snow Forecast

Those are insane numbers. I'd be shocked if it really snowed that much, but then again.. the San Gabriels (being a transverse range) can be one of the most prolific orographic ranges in North America. 2004-5, the backside of Mt Wilson had over 100" of water.

    Mount Bachelor, OR 2/11-12/23

yes, I hate the buy in advance model for the most part, although some areas you can still buy a day before and get a great rate (Tamarack ID $55 the night before vs 115 walkup). I don't follow all that many resorts, but the dynamically based lift ticket (based on demand) is favorable for some...

Apex Alpine, BC, Feb. 21, 2019

I've been looking at Apex as part of a possible BC trip next year. Looks like it could be a fun-ish area for a day or two, as long as the snow is good. It's been a very atypical La Nina year yet again for much of the PNW/BC.

    Mount Bachelor, OR 2/11-12/23

I think advance is the best bet... but even those are 103/127 right now for April. They have a spring pass for 319, that begins april 1... however, you obviously gotta ride more than a few days to make it worth it. I don't think they sell tickets on liftopia or any other discount sites when I...

    Castle Mt., AB, Feb.18-19, 2023

Nice report, and glad you at least got some new snow. Sucks about the baggage runaround. I'd love to get back to Castle, although the weather seems like its always a crapshoot with winds/fog. The time I was there 20 yrs ago had nice snow, but fog and winds (in spots) were so bad, it was hard to...

Mt. High East, Feb. 16, 2023

Interesting. I've never seen them do that either (closing Goldrush and still being open). It's also interesting that that is the direction for Telescope Peak. It would seem to be further east (right) to me, but it could just be the angle and my lack of memory the direction East faces. I agree...

    Mount Bachelor, OR 2/11-12/23

Nice report. I have also never done the back side either, as tonyc says, it does indeed always look hammered. We're hoping to head over next week, but both the wife and I got the Big C... recovering now, but will depend on energy levels. As far as beer, hope you like IPA's, Sbooker! This is...

More Telluride Mismanagement: Chair 9 Replacement delayed to late January

I was just reading that chair 10 broke down yesterday, I think... and may be down for a week or more. Sure seems like a lot of lift problems this year, or maybe my Facebook feed is just focusing on it more. Whitefish, whitewater, telluride to name a few with all kinds of problems this year. I...

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

It sure did up here in the PNW. Most of the action obviously stayed south of us. Quite a few very small storms this past month on top of a solid base, so not too many complaints on the overall conditions. Long range continues to show relatively dry weather for a good chunk of the month. The SW...

Mountain High West, Jan. 18, 2023

hmmm... interesting, because North used to be where the tubing area was when I worked up there. I was under the impression they moved it because it would become such a shit show on weekend up there, and getting up to Table Mtn (North) was a challenge due to traffic, and ocassionaly weather. East...

Mountain High West, Jan. 18, 2023

They looked in real bad shape after all those rain events. Interesting that lot is paid only now, but not surprised. Are there any free parking lots for them now, or do people still park along the highway like they used to? Any idea what happened to Mt. High North? Does it still operate if...
