    Retirement Road Trips

Here's Feb. 8 - Mar. 15, 2026, 4,186 miles: I drove to Mammoth on Super Bowl Sunday, skied one day there, then 4 at Tahoe. Over President's weekend I drove to Golden, B.C. with a few hours skiing at Brundage on the way. I had cat skiing at Chatter Creek and Island Lake, with Panorama and...

    Retirement Road Trips

Here's March 7-26, 2025, about 2,600 miles: This is the shortest ski trip I've posted in this thread, but it is only time we have driven the Tesla farther than Iron Blosam for skiing. We skied Steamboat (chargers in Craig and Kremmling), then Copper, Vail and A-Basin while visiting Paul in...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Not necessarily. I addressed this question earlier in this thread. FYI the eastern season was great through February but mostly warm and rainy in March/April. So we can safely say that March 2026 had to be one of the worst ski months ever in the US, though it was decent in Canada: not so...

Vail: Epic Pass Sales and Strategy

Pacific Northwest 2004-05: November storms had fairly high snow levels and were mostly rain in the ski areas. Early December storms dropped 1-3 feet but still substantial rain at low elevation. This was a very poor holiday season by the standards of the usually snowy Northwest despite some new...

Vail: Epic Pass Sales and Strategy

I'm working on a more detailed analysis of that. It's far from the worst season in California or the PNW; 2014-15 was substantially worse in both regions. 2004-05 was worse in most of the PNW and there are at least 5 other worse seasons in California. It was unquestionably the worst (since...

    East Village at Deer Valley

I heard while at Mammoth that the Alterra CEO lost his job due to "personal improprieties." No specifics, but the gist was handing out freebies/favors to friends and acquaintances. I agree with all of this. But here's a piece in WePowder about the Euro perspective on our western winter of...

The Patrouille des Glaciers Race: Zermatt to Verbier

This reminds me of the one between Crested Butte and Aspen, which I'm surprised actually took place this past March 29. Both races start at midnight. The Euro one ends at Verbier not that long after dawn.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

An strong El Niño for the upcoming season is being massively hyped even though current readings are neutral. This may be part of the reason for the forecast of strong El Niño. Nonetheless the El Niño/La Niña eastern Pacific temperature anomaly usually stabilizes by July/August. That's the...

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

We had a memorable (and not for the right reason) trek from Gad 2 up to the Birthday Chutes and into White Pine in March 2009.

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Baldy is about as generic a mountain name as you can get. There are 3 Mt. Baldy ski areas: California, B.C. and Ontario. I'm guessing that Alta and Sun Valley are not the only other places with peaks named "Mt. Baldy." I have no idea why that patrol map uses the possessive name for the...

US and Canada Season Recap from OpenSnow. Meanwhile I have a preliminary comparison to the infamous 1976-77 season: Nov.-Dec. Percent Normal California Pacific Northwest Interior Canada U.S. Northern Rockies Utah Northern & Central Colorado Southern & Western Colorado Northeast US...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Paywalled if you click directly. I turned off javascript and it only gave me a two sentence first paragraph. I'm going to call :bs: anyway. Articles purporting to forecast weather 2-4 months from now are 99% worthless clickbait. High humidity here is widespread only with tropical storms like...

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Nice pics above! That is a weird name for terrain on the opposite side the ski area from Mt. Baldy (Baldy Chutes Alta, High Baldy Snowbird). But I have the patrol map framed in my office, and that hike-to bowl above Gad 2 is indeed called Baldy's Bowl. It does face east not west though.

    Snowbrains : Journalism Award

That was the award I won last year! I share ChrisC's sentiments exactly. The journalism may be sloppy but it's supporting an enviable lifestyle.

MIT Technology Review: The snow gods...How a couple of ski bums built the internet’s best weather app

I have put the link into ChrisC's first post of this thread. Today is the first time I've read it. Bryan and Joel both have rather inspiring entrepreneurial back stories. I'll reiterate that the "expert" reports are the key value of OpenSnow, particularly from the three originators in Tahoe...

    Ski-Air Travel

I reviewed my travel since the late 1980's and came up with most of how I got the million miles. 30 trips to East Coast/Caribbean ~150K 12.5 trips to Europe ~140K (The .5 had a return via Iceland on Icelandair), also excludes 2004 and 2013 Alps trips on other airlines 7.5 trips to Asia ~120K...

    Ski-Air Travel

I agree seat configuration is important. Those Emirates A380 seats a year ago are just big/wide/reclinable enough to work for a large number of people like Liz who normally have a lot of trouble sleeping on planes. I cannot predict well when I will sleep and when not. I usually sleep some, but...
