    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

A mention of my local ski hill (or "bump" if you prefer that description)! I agree with everything you say about skiing in the Northeast, although I HATE skiing through snowmaking guns when they're on because they are not making "snow" but rather frozen ice particles that makes if feel like your...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Yea, Tony, the long term statistics may not back this up but, anecdotally and from my (sometimes faulty) memory, it just seems like we don't get as much snow and cold weather, at least in southern to central New England as we used to and I've lived here for 60 plus years.

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

Not much natural snow in the Northeast but very good snow making weather. Was 5 degrees this morning at my house, with low humidity. Stowe is reporting 93 of 129 trails open. Rain and warm weather will hurt some but it's the new reality that ski areas have to deal with.

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

It SHOULD be much better at GT.....almost 100% open and it's been snowing heavily (hope the drive is OK for you), with any where from 2 to 4 feet of new snow predicted over the next four days. I hope you have low light lenses for your googles because I don't think you'll be seeing much sunlight...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

I think you're mis-reading the chart, Tony. The "0" prediction for Vermont is for "snow" and not "precipitation", that would include rain. See the link below to Accuweather prediction for Burlington, VT for the next seven days. Shows warm temps and rain for, at least, Sunday, Monday, and maybe...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather & Conditions

You may have spoken too soon, Tony. The forecast is now to warm up over the weekend and rain for all of the Northeast on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 29 and 30. Ugh. Too bad because it has been very good snowmaking weather for the past few days. Was -4 (F) the other morning at our house.

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

Chris Tomer of Mountain Weather is predicting another 8 to 12 inches through Xmas day in the Tetons and then up to 3 feet between Dec. 26 and Jan. 1. Who knows if this will really happen and I find he tends to be a little over optimistic when it comes to snow totals.

Have a great trip and hope the snow is good for you. I'm envious!

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

Nice! I just looked at the web cams for GT. Snowing there now and it looks like mid-Winter. They have, like, 92 out of 95 trails open and more snow (maybe 1 to 2 feet?) is expected between Dec. 25 and Dec. 30. Jackson Hole has all their lifts open, including the tram, but only about 50% of their...

    Sick/Injured During a Ski Trip

Tseeb, I think your stories of woe on the slopes and off, can best be summarized by that age-old philosophical quote "sh*t happens". But I feel your pain.

Not going to Grand Targhee on this trip?

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

Have you given up on Targhee over the holiday? Have gotten a fair amount of snow over the past few days and they now have all 6 of their lifts open and 87 of 93 trails open. I would expect they might have 100% open by this weekend, with perhaps more snow later in the week. From their webcams...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

I find this YouTube site to be a helpful overview of ski area weather forecasts. Predicting medium to heavy snow for the Tetons around the 15th of December.

    New England/Northeast Foliage Reports

"Leaf peeping" season in the Northeast US is always a busy time of the year for tourism. As noted above, usually runs from about mid-September to mid-October (peak times but the shoulder season can last a few weeks on either side of those dates) and chronologically, goes from North to South...

    Teton Pass road collapses

I read today that the Wyoming DOT may try to cut a temporary detour through part of the forest that is close to the section of the road that collapsed and they think it may take only weeks to get it open. From the photos I saw, I'm not sure how they will do this but they are under pressure to...

    Teton Pass road collapses

I don't know how many people saw this news story but a section of Teton Pass between Jackson Hole and Driggs, Idaho catastrophically failed in a major disaster. It's truly frightening when you see the photos of the total collapse of the underlying road structure. Amazing that no one was hurt...

    Grand Targhee - Powder Day - 5/23/24

https://www.grandtarghee.com/the-mountain/cams-conditions/webcams Webcam from the Grand Targhee base at 4:30 PM (EST) on 5/23/24. Over a foot of new snow in the past 24 hours. Not sure of the consistency of the snow but they are now allowing uphill traffic on the mountain.

    Americans Moving to Florida?

Thanks, Chris! You've now convinced me to NEVER move to Florida (either permanently or for the winter months); I have visited for short periods of time and it can be nice, in certain areas, to spend a week or two in the Winter or early Spring to get out of the Northeast cold.

    Death in the Swiss Backcountry

Terrible and very sad story. As the parent of an only child, my heart aches for her parents. I'm not sure what the moral is but Mother Nature can be a very cruel mistress at times. This (almost) exact same tragedy occurred to friends of ours in western Massachusetts about 10 or 12 years ago...
