Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

My problem is not everyone skis. Sure, the safety bars without footrests are fine, but the ones with footrests can be a major PIA for snowboarders. I've cramped up/charlie-horsed several times in the past to accommodate a full HSQ. Then the fiasco of raising the bar before getting off, (and yes...

    Apex, B.C., Jan. 16, 2025

If I were traveling by myself or with a buddy, that might often be the choice, but w/the wife (very fair-weather skier), she likes to have a plan and comfortable lodging. Plus, we're not staying in Kelowna for either place, we're doing ski in/out. Also, I got 35% off at ski in/out @ Big White...

    Apex, B.C., Jan. 16, 2025

We are locked in for lodging, so no flexibility there. The Indy Pass is walk up, so if it really sucks, we can opt out of riding that day. Each day, models seem to be showing a better chance for that pattern change. Sorry you didn't get better conditions while you're there, though.

That report isn't very promising, however the prolonged west coast ridging may finally break down in about a week. I'll be up there in about 3 weeks utilizing my Indy Pass (49 North, Big White and Apex).

    LA Fires: Jan 2025

Spot on analysis. From what I've heard, aircraft were indeed grounded for much of the worst part of the devastation due to the severe winds. All the planning in the world won't prevent a 50+mph firestorm from going wherever it wants. I've heard fire specialists say that embers were reported up...

    Grand Targhee 12/30/2024

congrats... looks like you scored! I lived in Alta, WY/Driggs in 2013-2014. It was so awesome having it as a local hill that year. A lot has changed since then, with the Coulter lift and lift tix prices more than doubling what they were back then. However, the powder is probably just as good...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

thats not bad at all for Jackson. Targhee is very light.... although, it's also after 2... but still. I suspect visibility is also a factor. Tamarack, ID yesterday was ~ 20 minutes. Haven't heard how long Brundage lines were, but I suspect less thanks to the new HSQ, which now gives 2...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

December started slow (only a few inches until the 13th), but the dreaded long term high pressure did not redevelop over our area as expected, as things picked up again the 14th through the 18th... the next ~10 days look pretty good, but snow levels could be an issue at times. Not really any...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

The skiing/riding is fantastic here in the mtns of w-central Idaho with 80-100% open. It's the best early season in a very long time. We're not a sun valley or aspen, but With Tamarack, Brundage and even Bogus Basin within striking distance, it can make for a fun ski trip for the family. Of...

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

79" at the Lakeview (top) measurement... and I know it's actually more than that, as that top gauge is chronically wind affected for measurements. Either way, the groomers have continued to be good, although today their was a tiny bit of slush on more sun exposed terrain. Inversions below, but...

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

I hit Brundage on Tuesday, and was really surprised at how well the trees rode. Normally, I wouldn't even consider trees this early in the season, but the almost 7 ft of snow so far this year (with some big time rain i the middle of the snowpack)... made for a great base. Didn't hit a thing...

Ski mag only likes less crowded, Ikon resorts for 2025

If it's anything like USA today, Forbes or Outside Mag "Best of" (Resorts, etc) they are pretty much self nominated by the marketing depts at these resorts, then beg readers on their facebook pages to vote everyday.

Wolf Creek, CO - First North American Ski Area Opens on 10/22/24

My buddy (who lives in Pagosa) hit it opening day and said it was decent on several of the main runs. I don't think he ventured off trail, however. When I lived there from 2015-2019, I did a few openers/early season, and attest that they can usually get several of main runs open with a couple...

SoCal and Ski Area Fires, Sept. 2024

My friend (who volunteers for the USFS out of Big Pines) shared a video from Blue Ridge Campground, which basically butts up against the bottom terminal of the Discovery Chair at East. Hard to tell, but I think you can barely see the the bottom lift tower about 10-13 seconds in. Regardless, lots...

    Is Pomerelle a Powder Paradise?

Pomerelle is intriguing, as driving by to the north on I-84, it's obvious there's some big mountains down there to the south that kinda sit all alone. However, as was mentioned, the terrain looks pretty mellow. It's about a 5.5 hr drive for me, so unlikely I do a trip down there for the hell of...

Is Mt. Waterman Circling the Drain?

yes, horrible idea/bad investment. As much as I love the idea of Waterman, I think it's time is over. Just way to many variables to operate it, mainly being the weather and keeping a road open (not to mention employees).

    Valdez, Alaska: April 14-19, 2024

WOW, very impressive trip, and great photos! We have a boot fitter here in McCall, ID that does Heli-guiding in Valdez every spring... can't remember his name, but the couple times I've talked to him, he's made me want to get up there! Unfortunately, I'm not sure I could take the chance on the...

Is Mt. Waterman Circling the Drain?

Probably like many of the other places over the years that close. They (the USFS) will likely remove the lift, and it will become a memory of the past. I really hope I'm wrong though, and they can find someone to buy it and somehow find a way to prosper.

Is Mt. Waterman Circling the Drain?

Funny response, and he's obviously right (KK). I have a feeling Waterman will be gone for good, soon unfortunately (unless somebody with a bunch of money (and no brains) buys it. Stranger things have happened, I guess.
