    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

US and Canada Season Recap from OpenSnow. Meanwhile I have a preliminary comparison to the infamous 1976-77 season: Nov.-Dec. Percent Normal California Pacific Northwest Interior Canada U.S. Northern Rockies Utah Northern & Central Colorado Southern & Western Colorado Northeast US...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Paywalled if you click directly. I turned off javascript and it only gave me a two sentence first paragraph. I'm going to call :bs: anyway. Articles purporting to forecast weather 2-4 months from now are 99% worthless clickbait. High humidity here is widespread only with tropical storms like...

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Nice pics above! That is a weird name for terrain on the opposite side the ski area from Mt. Baldy (Baldy Chutes Alta, High Baldy Snowbird). But I have the patrol map framed in my office, and that hike-to bowl above Gad 2 is indeed called Baldy's Bowl. It does face east not west though.

    Snowbrains : Journalism Award

That was the award I won last year! I share ChrisC's sentiments exactly. The journalism may be sloppy but it's supporting an enviable lifestyle.

MIT Technology Review: The snow gods...How a couple of ski bums built the internet’s best weather app

I have put the link into ChrisC's first post of this thread. Today is the first time I've read it. Bryan and Joel both have rather inspiring entrepreneurial back stories. I'll reiterate that the "expert" reports are the key value of OpenSnow, particularly from the three originators in Tahoe...

    Ski-Air Travel

I reviewed my travel since the late 1980's and came up with most of how I got the million miles. 30 trips to East Coast/Caribbean ~150K 12.5 trips to Europe ~140K (The .5 had a return via Iceland on Icelandair), also excludes 2004 and 2013 Alps trips on other airlines 7.5 trips to Asia ~120K...

I agree seat configuration is important. Those Emirates A380 seats a year ago are just big/wide/reclinable enough to work for a large number of people like Liz who normally have a lot of trouble sleeping on planes. I cannot predict well when I will sleep and when not. I usually sleep some, but...

    Camelback PA: Spring Ops

Is this new policy on Camelback’s part? I don’t recall Patrick listing it in his prior eastern closing threads, but perhaps it didn’t occur to him as it would not to most of us.

    Mammoth, April 15-17, 2026

The weather models predicted mostly cloudy Wednesday with clearing the next two days. Wind predictions were modest. But we know wind and clouds are challenging for the models. On Wednesday night I read Mammoth Snowman’s report from Tuesday morning. His weather guy said Tuesday and Wednesday...

    Mammoth, April 15-17, 2026

It snowed 2 feet last weekend, prompting a big crowd of locals Monday. The top opened 2PM and was tracked out in 45 minutes. They reopened chair 22 (closed since March 29) just Monday morning for the powder. Since Monday it has gradually warmed, but the wind has been a factor. By our arrival...

    Kirkwood, CA 4/13-4/16/2026

Liftlines? That’s somewhat low vertical for Tseeb on a day like this. But as ChrisC noted, Kirkwood is not a very efficient ski area. Our last time at Kirkwood late March 2014 was similarly a powder day during an overall wretched season and it was a zoo. But that day was a Sunday.

Les Contamines, FR: 03/07/23 + Connection Maps

I’m not not surprised there there could be a snowfall difference with Les Contamines considering the big difference I just observed between Chatel and Morzine/Les Gets.

Les Contamines, FR: 03/07/23 + Connection Maps

Weathertoski and I both emphasize altitude/exposure more than most ski analysts, particularly those in North America. The exposure flaw is skewed toward mid-February and later, becoming increasingly more important every week thereafter. I'll hazard a guess that weathertoski's visits to Les...

    Ski-Air Travel

The credit card companies are a significant source of revenue for the airlines. They are also insurance against unforeseen disasters like COVID because that revenue is fairly independent of airline travel. Delta has overhauled its program a couple of times, but there always seems to be an...

    Skier Visits by Area

Not really. Snowbird tickets aren't cheap and have increased in recent years at a similar rate. Formerly nearly all Utah day tickets were a bargain at the local ski shops. Those days are gone in the era of Epic and Ikon.

    Skier Visits by Area

Obsolete. Notice the big bump in Alta's number from 2003-04 to 2004-05, which I'm sure was due to 2004-05 being the first year of high speed Collins. Snowbird actually declined despite 2004-05 being by my educated guess the best ever season in the Cottonwood Canyons. Why? It snowed 122 inches...
