Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Short line for Collins at 9am this morning. Took a little while for the High T and Backside to open. My ski buddy is having a good time. More grooming on the Collins side than after the last storm that only dropped 4 inches. Key factor for today is that it's staying much colder all day long.

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

My ski buddy still at Alta considered staying a few extra days, but decided to head home on Sunday, April 19, as planned. Snowpine is open year round. GMD has opted to stay open until Alta lifts close on April 26. The other three lodges in the town of Alta will be closed after April 19.

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

If you only want to ski terrain off the High T, Backside, or Devil's Castle . . . I wouldn't bother to fly. My ski buddy (mid-70s) who drove from Albuquerque isn't headed home until Sunday, as has been his habit for a decade. He'll have a good time this weekend before he starts driving on...

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Given how the lower section of Ballroom was on the warm days that Backside was closed after I arrived on April 6, it wasn't a surprise. The 4 inches on April 13 was the right density to be fun if you knew where to go. Fluffy snow would've meant dust-on-crust everywhere off-piste. Main Street...

    Ski-Air Travel

Boarding on Southwest is running pretty smoothly. The electronic signs that used to say "1-30" and "31-60" and so on now start with "Group 1" and "Group 2" and go on from there. There are eight boarding groups. Groups 7 and 8 are the ones at risk of not having overhead bin space on a full...

Interesting. I'm not a subscriber to MassLive and just found it from a general search. The first view I could read the entire article.

The Black Mountain April Fool's definitely was believed for a while by some people. Apparently there was more than one story related to Mad River Glen in VT. Took me a few paragraphs to start laughing at Stuart's story. New England stories, April 3, 2026...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Wolf Creek had 19 inches of fresh snow as of 9am this morning. The Horseshoe snowcat (free) was running. Given the state of the rest of Colorado, I bet there are some people considering a drive south this week. Lift tickets are Adults $70, Seniors 65+ $51, and kids for $35 because the rest of...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Wolf Creek opened up 100% of their terrain at 9:00 this morning, April 2. The initial Snow Report at 6:00am had Knife Ridge and Horseshoe Bowl as closed. An updated email blast was sent out at 9:20 MT or I wouldn't have known.

    Indy Pass

My Idaho ski safari in March 2025 was based on starting in SLC and using Ikon and Indy. I often meet up with Bill in SLC. He will drive anywhere from Albuquerque for a ski trip out west if someone else does the travel planning. We were joined by an intermediate Ski Diva from the east in SLC...

The Alta Lodge webcam shows the line for Collins and Wildcat. There weren't many people in line for Collins at 8:45 this morning. The storm total on the Alta website was 19 inches by 10am. April 2, 2026 at 10am MT:

Spring 2026 in Utah Cottonwood Canyons

Still snowing at Alta as of this morning. The snow conditions report on the Alta website gets updated every few hours during a multi-day snowstorm. Totals get adjusted as needed. I fly to SLC on Sunday morning. Screenshots are from Alta website the morning of April 2, 2026. First report...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

The stat comparison of interest to me would be the number of nights with a low above 32 degrees in March 2026 in the Rockies and along the Pacific coast, including Tahoe. The degree of melt in the past few weeks, combined with lack of new snow seems very unusual. The two mountains I've skied...

Hope it works out well. Evan was happier having potential snowfall to talk about. I arrive at Alta Lodge on April 5.

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

It feels right to add a link to Stuart's jaunt to check out small hills in Maine in January 2026. Plenty of driving for a few hours of skiing, with quite a few runs based on surface lifts. He included several video clips. March 27, 2026...

What is going on at Crystal? Management change at the top March 2026

Not really comparable if you are talking about the Crystal top leader vs the Vail Resort CEO before Katz took over again. Operational leadership and corporate leadership are quite different. I say that based on experience working for 15 years for a company after grad school. It was a startup...

What is going on at Crystal? Management change at the top March 2026

Of all the resorts owned by Alterra, the one that seems to has had the most issues that make headlines outside the PacNW is Crystal. As of this week, Crystal has a new President, a promotion of a VP. The last President was also a promotion of a VP, which happened a few years ago. I paid...

My experience with warm spring conditions at Alta is that it helped to wax skis every 2-3 days. However, after I started treating my skis with Phantom Glide, there was no need to think about waxing during late season trips. Or any other ski trip. In the first couple years after the Phantom...
