Red Lodge, MT: March 19, 2021

another great report, thank you. I've been to Red Lodge in the summer, and it is indeed a great little town. I've heard about the inconsistent/variable snow issues, but didn't know about the HSQ debacle. What a mess, and quite unfortunate.

Discovery Basin, MT: March 16, 2021

Nice report! Discovery is owned by the same family that own Wolf Creek (Pitchers). After riding at Discovery a few times, and several years later having 3 seasons at Wolf Creek, I can say that they are not the brightest people at operating ski areas, IMO. The Silver Chief chair at Disco and the...

Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole Christmas Lodging options

Ha...understood, but according to the post in April, it's supposedly starting this summer. EDIT: It HAS started per their FB page. The installation of the list bases will be done this summer, and the remaining chairlift stuff next summer, etc.. and will be ready for 21/22 opening.

Grand Targhee/Jackson Hole Christmas Lodging options

Skier visits are way up at Targhee the last few years, so don't expect it to be like it used to with no lift lines, etc. The most plausible reason is the addition to GT being part of the Mountain Collective, but also the Ikon Pass addition for Jackson Hole undoubtedly brought more skiers to the...

Angeles Crest after Bobcat Fire, May 21 & June 10, 2021

With all the fires since I left, the Angeles is a totally different place than when I lived/worked there. It's only a matter of time before the remaining coniferous forest towards Wrightwood will burn. I fear when it does it'll be quite tragic, too. The one thing that has kept it safe all...

Big Sky Implements Surcharge For Lone Peak Tram

I also was not terribly impressed with Big Sky when I was there in 2011,(I think) but it was so uncrowded, it made it much more tolerable. I actually liked the terrain at Moonlight a little better, although conditions over there were not good. I didn't get to go up the tram because of weather...

Lookout Pass, ID: March 15, 2021

Wallace is a fun town, although it was pretty closed up when I was there a couple weeks before you. I'm sure between Covid/shoulder season was the cause. Summer is quite busy when I've been there, and as you mentioned the Hiawatha trail is a big draw. I also rode Lookout while I was there...

    49 Degrees North, WA: March 13, 2021

Some good thoughts, TonyC. As you know, my wife and I have been bouncing around the west the last 10 yrs trying on places to see where we want to live, long term. Winter sun ended up being one of the biggest priorities, but trying find a good balance of sun and snow was a challenge. I also don't...

    49 Degrees North, WA: March 13, 2021

Thanks for the report. Was tempted to head over there on my trip a week or so earlier, but just a bit too far from my base point in Kellogg. Plus, waiting until the new chair next year sounds more enticing. I also agree, (and can confirm firsthand living several years in the region) with TonyC...

    Monarch, CO: 04/03/21

yep, the sun starts to overpower the air temps at some of those areas, even at 10,000+ ft One of the reasons Wolf Creek closes in early April is it becomes a slushfesh, and with its low angle terrain, difficult to ride and not much fun. As Tony knows, Monarch is over half east facing. Nice...

Mt. Spokane, WA: March 12, 2021

I was very close to trying to squeeze in Mt Spokane and/or 49 North, but with their odd weekday schedules and 2 hrs away from Silver Mtn (where I was staying) was just too much, so decided to hit Lookout for a day instead, and save those two for another trip... maybe next year. The slow riblet...

    Schweitzer, ID: 03/03/21

great report! I need to make it back up there sometime. as far a masks... I, too was surprised (kinda, not really) at how everything was "back to normal" up there (even though non-enforced mask mandates were still in place in Kellogg and CDA)... especially considering that area got hit pretty...

Turner Mt., MT, Feb. 28, 2021

Even when I lived in NW Montana near Whitefish, people said half the challenge was just getting to that place (Turner). Looks a little better than I expected, TBH. I didn't realize it had ~2k ft vert. I have heard it can be great on a powder day, for obvious reasons.

Good to meet, and spend the day with you James. I, too ride mostly solo... so it's nice to have someone to listen to my banter! (some call it complaining). O:) I was pretty happy with my two days here at Silver. Pretty fun, varied mountain. In a perfect world, that riblet double chair would...

Mission Ridge, WA, Feb. 24, 2021

When I lived in Leavenworth for a year, I enjoyed going to Mission Ridge over Stevens Pass. As mentioned, the snow is much drier, and I think the terrain is pretty fun and varied. The year I was there, they also had a pretty good snow year, which made it all the better.. as they usually get...

nice... I thought they were gonna upgrade that Coburn lift a few years ago to a HSQ? Are you going to be in the Silver Valley this week? I'm planning on getting there tomorrow night and riding Silver Mon and Tues, Lookout Wed... Brundage yesterday was also pretty busy (10-15 min lines at...

Mt. Ashland, OR, Feb. 20, 2021

I get it about the vacation days, as I was somewhat that way also when I worked, but still generally didn't more than ~7 hrs driving by myself. The exception was a a couple 1 day 10 hr drives to SLC and back from LA, as I think that was the longest. That's always a tough one as splitting it up...

Mt. Ashland, OR, Feb. 20, 2021

I don't know how/why so many people feel like they have to do 10-15 hr day drives. Is it because they're cheap and don't want to pay for a motel room? Or too obsessive/anxious to get somewhere? A man thing (I've never known a woman so obsessive about getting somewhere that fast, unless its for a...

    Tamarack, ID, Feb. 6, 2021

It was great being able to finally make a few turns with you, Tony after our online acquaintance all these years. I also enjoyed meeting LIz. Sorry you didn't get any sun while you're here (its been back out the last couple days) but at least the snow was fairly decent.

Brundage Mtn AND Tamarack, ID announce expansion plans

funny, I feel the opposite. Brundage has been getting alot more visitors the last few years ($), and although I haven't seen the specifics of their expansion, it 'seems' much more subdued compared to Tamarack, who's master plan comes off as inspiring to to be a mega-resort. I would be shocked in...
