I am sure there are plenty of these ‘pizza box’ single lifts but we have never ridden one. Novelty value.

Madarao today. Almost bluebird. Pretty scenery with the snow on the trees. ^^^ Trees with nice snow. Spaced for gapers like me.

I’ve never skied the east so I have zero perspective sorry.

Oh. And interestingly there were a lot of conifer type trees at the top of the ski area yesterday. Most of the trees I’ve seen in other ski areas have been deciduous types.

Most of it is renowned for being mellow pitch and from the limited amount I’ve seen from the two times I’ve been here that seems to be the case. As far as gradient is concerned like most of Snowmass or Grand Targhee or Northstar etc. The area under the tram at Ryuoo yesterday was a little...

No. I’m on my 102mm Rustlers. They keep me buoyant enough as I’m a lightweight. Any flaw in my powder skiing is the driver not the ski. Kylie is on 92mm Blizzards. She could do with something a bit wider I guess.

I don’t ski powder well but Kylie is struggling. A bit too much of a good thing. Funny to watch.

The second tram was delayed because they don’t run it with less than 10 people on board. 😂 I had to share that run with someone else.

Got the rope drop at the top of the tram. Recency bias and all but that could be the best inbounds ski run of my life.

The tram is luxury. Has seats. Eat your heart out Jackson/Snowbird. Oh. And less people.

Change of plans. At the recommendation of some people at breakfast we’ll go to Ryuoo Snow Park. The consensus is there will be less competition there.

It snowed about 20 inches on the hills last night apparently. We’ll head to Madarao in a few minutes in search of some powder turns. It’s about 30 minutes drive from our digs. Had a pretty stunning dinner at a local joint last night. About $45 USD including two beers and a bad red wine.

@ChrisC those nicely spaced trees you spoke of.

We’re at Myoko. Only about 5 inches overnight. Turns a soft though.

Like almost all of the ski areas in Japan the hill I went to yesterday has no or very little machine snow infrastructure so in warm seasons their open period is either very short or really low quality skiing/snowboarding. I believe 2022/23 was pretty terrible for the low elevation central Honshu...

We’re at a little hill called Yomase for a half day. Just trying to dial the legs back in and avoid the crowds. There must be at least 30 people here. About 20 USD for a half day ticket. A big bowl of very very good ramen about 6 USD. Impressive snow quality for under 1200 metres ASL.

https://altitude-guides.com/en/adventures/?type=adventures&season=winter If anyone is looking for an affordable destination with relatively no crowds or competition for powder and a decent snow record and plenty of terrain over 2000 metres the Maurienne Valley is a good place to consider. Group...

Lots of independent breweries in Tokyo. The cool little Izakaya family owned restaurants are prolific and great value.

We’ve not committed to anything but Kylie has plans to catch up with the daughter of one of her French classmates at some point. She has a restaurant in Grenoble. We’ll see how things pan out I suppose.
