Temples and shrines and bright lights and red lanterns and unagi and sushi and matcha and sake and Japanese craft beer. Seriously though we have no hard plans. My wife has some ideas. I might post a couple of pics.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Weather is a strange thing. Here in Brisbane we average about 10 inches of rain over December and January. We’ve had an inch and a half since December 1st with nothing meaningful on the horizon. It’s the driest summer I can remember. I’m trading a forecasted week in the 90s here for cooler...

I’m on the plane in a few hours but stopping in Tokyo for a couple of days before driving to the mountains. Two things. I can’t ski that. Secondly it’ll be well tracked by the time I get there but it looks like we might get some fresh while we are there.

@ChrisC If you're going to Val D'Isere the socials are telling me the tunnel at the top of the 3000 drag lift is open again this year. You'll have to check it out for novelty. All that meadow area under the Tommueses lift is nice low angle stuff too but it's pretty accessible so gets tracked out...

That is my idea of a great day out. I don’t need steep when there is soft snow to ski.

Your backyard looks a nice place to be Tony. I would love to have a season here in Brisbane that delivered the red and yellow leaves. Having said that my OCD would hate the leaves in the pool. :)

Verbier guides are probably done with gapers like me joining a group and slowing it down.

People on the ground in Tirol (and Livigno if that’s not Tirol) from the Aussie forum suggesting things are sketchy because of a weak layer despite ‘level 2’ avi rating. Very easy to trigger small slides apparently.

And that’s what I like about collecting beer ‘glasses’. Memories are relived each time one comes out of the cupboard.

I like the ‘Sample the Sierra’ glass. I think I might have had the Trail Builder quite a few years ago. I’ll be checking out the Japanese beer scene soon. I’ll report back if there’s anything more exciting than Asahi happening. (Not that Asahi is too shabby).

I will believe this when I see it. I'm a pessimist by nature and I hold weather forecasts more than three days out in very low regard. That said it is typical that the area in general gets regular snow this time of year.

The below from an Aussie that has lived in Japan for a couple of decades - If you're interested in central Honshu and want low key & very quiet mid week, then you need to avoid places that have been "discovered" by foreign tourists. "Central Honshu" to me means Nagano, Niigata, Gunma & Gifu...
