Stretched our legs yesterday after a 24 hour flight. This lake is about a five minute drive from the centre of Briancon. Croissants count is one. Beer count is three. Vertical metre count is 480. We’ll do a more adventurous stroll today in Parc National Des Ecrins.

We’ll be hiking with a little bit of biking. We have clothing that could suit summer skiing.

Tempting but all that extra gear for a day on what could be sticky snow….. And I’m about to turn 54 and I’ve never gone on an overseas trip without skiing. The time is right to break that one dimensional streak. :)

I’ll be in the Alps on Sunday. There has been a rapid change from an unusually cold spring in the French alps to normal temps now. By next week it’s predicted to be about 85 degrees in the valleys. Hopefully the south faces in the alpine are walkable. Might have to take my togs.

There have been lots of instances of mid winter rain on Honshu in the last 10 years. We got very lucky with daily powder on the trip this year but a warm spell would have made the trip pretty shit to be honest. The mountains just don’t have the vertical or pitch (generally) to make non powder...

Shiga Kogen is large but the individual areas (some of which are lift linked or bus linked) are small. The individual areas have there own lift ticket and many Japanese people buy the pass for the small area where their lodging is and stick to that sector.

I consciously overlooked some well known ski areas when in Japan a couple of months ago and opted for unknown small hills some days. I will still ski big areas in the future but I’m more inclined to think like James from now on.
