    Mt Bachelor 12/13 Summit Open

Washington resorts are lower. Also, Bachelor is on the Cascade Front (nobody calls it that out here, but I wanted to put it into language that Utahns would understand). That gives it more continental cold air to work with. The Washington ski areas (with the exception of Mission Ridge) are...

Hi, Looks good. How worried are you about rain later in the week? The NOAA forecast I got is at 6001'. Thanks, Doug

Timberline 6/21 High Cascade Snowboard Camp

That is the Wy'East Face. Skied it three years ago on July 4 weekend. You offload Palmer, traverse east as far as you can go, then cross the (to my recollection) crevassed White River Glacier, ascend its lateral moraine, then skin up/boot up to the ridgeline. You might want to hire a...

    Snowbird, UT 4/9/14

I was in the Seven Summits club this winter. About as charming as an airport frequent flier lounge. That TV screen was playing a movie of a fire. By the way, do I need a new password for this website because of the Heartbleed? Hiked up St. Helens today and got a great corn snow run in...

Jim Steenburgh Analysis of Salt Lake Inversions

There is no "mid-January inversion." There is, however, an annual mid-January debate in this forum about the existence of said mid-January inversion.

    Kicking Horse Jan 3

After three days of intense touring at Rogers Pass needed a break day. Kicking Horse got 17 cm fresh last night (Revy got twice that but I am base camped in Golden). The lift was crowded - I think that people must know when it snows nowadays. Maybe a 15 minute line. Anyways, there was fresh...

    Rogers Pass 12/31

OK, Utah must not be happening or I would be reading about. Skied Rogers Pass with a guide today, maybe got in 5000 vf which is fine because I have to do it tomorrow, the day after, and the day after that. The snow was creamy and base depths have picked up to 180 cm (sounds deeper, doesn't...

    Revelstoke 12/28

Thanks Marc! Maybe 3" today (Sunday) but when it is dense it doesn't take as much. The traverses here don't have sideways moguls, rocks, and snow fences. What fun is that? It takes 15 minutes to ski down - that is without stopping. Big snow tomorrow inbounds then into the backcountry.

    Revelstoke 12/28

Off for the winter as of yesterday and having already exceeded the recommended lifetime dose for PM2.5 decided to head 7 hours northeast of Seattle rather than 13 southeast. Coverage here is good - the woods could use more base but the bowls and runs were nice. A cloud hung over the top of the...

Hi Marc, That wasn't a vacation day. It was an academic day. I am supposed to write papers to be published in journals. Think I am OK - I doubt my boss is reading FTO. Otherwise I will have to go undercover (E.Nigma, anyone?)

    TR Crested Butte, Telluride

It is late and I may have missed something... Just rent skis at the mountain. You will pay a bit more but you can change them out if what you picked isn't working for you.

    AltaBird Pass prices

Just checked, they went down. If this is the start of a trend, I won't have to save as much for my retirement. Of course, skiing may be a moot point by then, anyways.
