Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Snow?

+1 Here's Exhibit A, Mt. Baldy Feb. 14, 2001 after 7 feet of snow in 54 hours. Liz is the same way. Some of this is a matter of getting enough mileage. To me, the 2 feet Friday was a typical right side up LCC dump (storm starts dense, covers up any old crust, then finishes light and...

Looks good to me! I'll be interested to hear if EMSC scored any of that at the end of his week.

    Ski Lift Accidents in 2024/25

At the time KH opened it was obvious that the gondola should have had a mid-station. In fact, I think KH was supposed to open in 2000-01, which was a very low snow year in western Canada, and couldn't because the lower terrain was not covered.

    Ski Lift Accidents in 2024/25

As of today KH will run the Stairway to Heaven chair for those willing to ski tour from the top of the Pioneer chair.

    Alta/Snowbird Mar. 14, 2025

A couple of Adam's friends who live in SLC stayed in one of our Iron Blosam units vacated by someone in our group who left Thursday. Staying up here, we root for road closures/delays. The one today wasn't that long but it helped. Liz, George and I got to Wilbere chair at 9AM opening bell...

    Snowbird, Mar. 10-12, 2025

I just belatedly posted Mar. 10-11 and put it at the top of this thread to be sequential with JimK's report from Mar. 12. The area he called Upper Rasta Chutes we said was the first time for both of us. It is reached staying high on the Lizard Tail traverse. It's only few turns but they were...

    Alta, Mar. 9 and 13, 2025

I returned to Alta Thursday as the predicted storm was underway. I got lucky with a UTA bus at the base of Iron Blosam stairs within a couple of minutes and so did not need to take the Blackjack route as on Sunday. I got in line at Collins at 11:15. Ira was at Alta early and he said the...

I greatly appreciate the post and pics, will save me time while I'm busy on this trip. Moving posts to a new topic is very easy for me. Mar. 10-12 were all at Snowbird on sunny days with winter snow on high and north facing sectors and more spring elsewhere, so I'm grouping them together and...

I'm sure JimK's assessment is correct. But big powder dumps bring out the locals in force even in late April/May. I know because I've read numerous reports of those days from former admin. And we know there are lots more of those locals now that during the time of those reports 10-15 years...

    Europe 24/25

True for westerners but definitely not for those living on the East Coast. With the current American pricing model, easterners can ski cheaper in the Alps than at prominent western areas. Not necessarily to chase storms. Just book the air and car and take advantage of the compact driving...

    Europe 24/25

Liz and I enjoyed the last half of that run of powder filled trips, 4 of them in the 2017 through 2019 seasons, plus the 2014 Zermatt trip that changed Liz' mind about the Alps. 2023 was probably similar to many western trips with powder only on the 3 Via Lattea days out of a 17 day trip...

That's a bunch of :bs:. 3/8-11 couldn't have had better weather. If it takes more than 4 calm and sunny days to do that repair, it could be a month before they get around to it at this time of year.

    Alta, Mar. 9 and 13, 2025

In recent years we nearly always ski the opening day Sunday of Iron Blosam week at Alta with former admin. The big news this year is that the Mineral Basin chair is down, and it looks like that happened when Tseeb was there Feb. 27. I have not inquired myself, but word of mouth was that it...

On Monday 10+ of our Iron Blosam group started with a Gadzoom warmup. Next we moved to Gad 2, a few of us by an interesting line through tight trees to skier’s left of Organ Grinder. Ed Meisner there: After a couple of Gad 2 laps, I followed Mark Meisner to Great Scott, which he had curated...

Coverage looks OK in the pics. The issue as with many of these places is the altitude. With rain at the base, the only off piste snow that would be decent was near the very top. But yes, the day made a lot of sense, wanting to be where there was some below tree line terrain for visibility...

    Engelberg, CH: 03/09/25

The Laub is one of the greatest ski runs in the world, close to 4,000 vertical, exact north facing and continuously pitched like Jackson's Hobacks. And access is via a trivial traverse skier's right around a corner off the Laubersgrat lift.

    American Election 2024

No. To recap history here we bought the first one in April 2016, loved the car but range and charging speed on newer Teslas improved sufficiently that we traded it in and got a new one in 2019. Buying a new car that expensive and keeping it only 3 years is not a very responsible decision...

The Laub and the shorter off piste sectors from Jochpass are doable without a guide. You could have schmoozed some chairlift companions. How far down did direct north facing retain winter snow?

    Aspen, CO March 7 to 9, 2025

I did it 3x at ages 58, 61 and 62, the second of those with Tseeb. All of them took about 45 minutes, so maybe Tseeb is slowing down a tiny bit if it took him an hour at age 69. Not that much considering the verticals he’s racking up on this trip. After all 3 of my times I took a long lunch...

    American Election 2024

If this mattered to most Americans, Trump would never have been renominated in 2024, much less re-elected. Perhaps JimK can lend some insight here because I can’t. It has been amply demonstrated that opposing Trump on the basis of his lies or about Jan. 6 doesn’t work. It would be helpful if...
