Younger Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

Even 40 years ago, people in the Rockies had melodramatic challenges with safety bars. :icon-biggrin: I can't find the entire Fire and Ice movie on YouTube but here are two other clips: #1 and #2 along with the trailer. Some of you who've skied Aspen recently may be able to ID the various...

    Northeastern U.S. Weather

This Mont Tremblant report on Alpinfans is from a week ago (March 27). It's always interesting to read comments from Europe about North American ski areas. Visits to the Northeast from over there are rare as people naturally gravitate toward the West. Apparently, this guy was on a business trip...

    The Magic Pass

I wasn't recommending that you give up spring skiing at Mammoth/Bachelor to instead fly 14 hours overseas. I was just pointing out an obscure but worthwhile ski area on the Magic Pass that's hiding in plain sight and had nice conditions at the end of March.

    Europe 24/25

Not true. I learned to downhill ski in the northeast at age 37 and the majority of days during my first 15 seasons were there (blue font). The winter of 2015-16 was when I became primarily a long-haul destination skier, increasingly eastbound.

    The Magic Pass

Located in the western Valais region, Ovronnaz isn't part of the 4 Valleys/Verbier circuit; it's five-ish miles north, on the other side of the Rhône Valley. A member of the Magic Pass group, it doesn't look that big on the map but we know better -- check out these photos from the past ten days...

    LA Fires: Jan 2025

If that happens to us, I'll send Tony an invoice.

Now that I think about it, I had a similar moment the previous year at Serre Chevalier, also during a long drought. The upper 2/3 of the ski area was in surprisingly good shape, both on- and offpiste, however, the bottom 1,500 verts into the village were concrete, almost as bad as at Val...

    LA Fires: Jan 2025

As this WP article points out, it's very unlikely that LAers would accept the mass removal of palm trees, despite it being a smart move from a fire-mitigation perspective. Still, look at that clip in front of the McDonald's -- those look like hurricane-level gusts. Alternate link if that ^^...

    Europe 24/25

Fraser from Weather to Ski is with his family at Les Crosets on the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil. A few pix on Facebook if interested to see what the yin/yang snowpack looks like heading into April.

Fair enough. As I recall, my consternation was because you insisted repeatedly that we go to the bottom instead of downloading, and against my better judgement I let myself be talked into it!

    Europe 24/25

Not sure whether to address this ^^ increasingly exaggerated narrative, hah. Tony and Liz have skied with me at three different mega resorts in the Alps (Courchevel/3V, Serre Chevalier, and Val d'Isere/Tignes) and at no point did they witness my head exploding. I'll look the other way for now...

    Tignes 3-17-25

The Quebec guy who wrote the Zoneski report from Tignes mentions that the Grande Motte tram wasn't working while there. I wonder how long it stayed closed? In any event, this group appears to have stayed onpiste. @Sbooker scored the far better day.

    Saint Foy 3-19-2025

Here's an article from the Quebec website Zoneski about Sainte Foy's offpiste: in English or French (since you and the family always go to the French Alps, I assume that someone would like to practice reading it?). :icon-smile:

    Beer thread?

Yesterday was our turn for this unpleasant narrative when we learned the news about our excellent local brewery -- so named because it was near the intersection of Orange, East Orange, West Orange, and South Orange, New Jersey. As noted in their announcement, you could find their products all...

I noticed this ^^ too; however, Val d'Isere village doesn't come off as new and sterile. The only time that I can recall staying in newer purpose-built lodging like @Sbooker at Tignes was seven years ago at Isola. The village and base buildings were in the ghastly East German...

I didn't mean that they're off-topic, rather, that those are excellent photos of Lake Pend Oreille and one or two should be pasted for posterity in the water views thread.

Younger Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

Interesting to read ECer views of the safety bar question on NY Ski Forum. @MarzNC mentions something similar to moments that I've experienced in the Rockies. The only person who seriously objected to my putting the bar down at Alta was a mother, or grandmother, riding up with a tween boy who...

    24 Hours in Dubai, Feb. 28, 2025

Thanks for the helpful graphic. I see that the building has three "sky lobbies" (transfer stops on the express elevators), which the original World Trade Center pioneered. Just seeing those words makes me think of the 78th floor lobby on 9/11. :(

    American Election 2024

As a longtime NY Post reader, it's pretty obvious that the Murdoch empire's position is fueled by its effect on readership and advertising revenue, not political beliefs. The trajectory that Tony notes shows how the editorial board flipped for Trump before the 2016 elections then against him...
