    2023-24 Season Recap

Jim's ski days in the 2023-24 ski season: The most notable statistic for me this season is that my ski days matched my age in years. I'm 70 years old and I skied 70 total days, 69 lift-served and 1 skinning. I don't believe I'd skied my age since my 30s. Although I had a few skiing-induced...

Big & Little Cottonwood Canyons: Car-Reservation-Only On Weekends/Holidays?

When I think of the superb and extensive lift infrastructure in the Alps (such as this Stoos train in Switzerland) it blows my mind that Utah can't make something happen like a simple train/gondola up LCC. It ties back to a cultural thing, US-cars, Europe-mass transit. There is also this...

    Retirement Road Trips

In winter Tony keeps close track of powder days, in summer it must be cloudless, blue sky days with temps between 65 and 75 degrees. :)

My Drive from Utah to Virginia, May 2024

May 18, Saturday, we traveled about 500 miles this day from deep in the Rockies (Salida, CO) to the wide open Great Plains of Hays, KS. We took the scenic route north on US 24. This is a view of Mt. Elbert (right center), elevation 14,433', tallest peak in CO. Kinda neat to see this on our...

My Drive from Utah to Virginia, May 2024

May 17, Friday, Like much of the day before, the route today was going to be totally new for us. Leaving the Monastery we headed north across the NM-CO border on SR 17. It paralleled a section of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR route through the bucolic southern San Juan mountains including...

    Americans Moving to Florida?

Wow, this thread opened a can of worms :) I'm pretty conservative, but consider myself an independent politically. I usually never let politics or culture war issues diminish my appreciation of any place I visit. Must say, in my recent cross country drive I spent part of a day in little...

My Drive from Utah to Virginia, May 2024

My wife and I just completed a 9-day road trip in mid-May 2024 from Utah to Virginia. We traveled about 3000 miles and wandered around scenic sections of UT, NM and CO before crossing the Great Plains and the Mid-West. There was one hiccup, but it was mostly a great trip with beautiful weather...

    Retirement Road Trips

I'm getting ready to drive from SLC to Wash DC. Will take a route past Moab, into NM, up through CO, then across KS and points East. Will go silent probably for a week or two until I complete trip and settle back in Eastern locale. If I get some good photos I'll post a few.

    Powder vs Spring skiing

Yeah Pow Mow is getting kinda wacky. I'm not that crazy about the place either, although it's got some marvelous intermediate cruising terrain as I remember. Sundance is pretty cheap, wanna say under $100 for a weekday?? PS: back to spring skiing today 11 May 2024 at Snowbird, super fun day:

    Western Weather 2017-18 and Later

My kids have houses in UT and FL (among other places). I wouldn't mind splitting the year between both, although maybe just the Fall in FL. Panama City Beach, Nov 2022, air temp 83F, water temp 77.

Utah & Alta's Last day, 21 Apr 2024 and beyond

11 May 2024 was special for me at Snowbird, UT. Besides enjoying good times with good friends and good snow, this was my 70th and last ski day of the season. My wife and I drive east on Monday. 70 is a PR for ski days in a season. It also matches my age. Kinda like that symmetry! Hope you all...

Where and when to spend 3 weeks..

This is useful feedback. When people ask, what is your favorite ski area? I usually say the Aspen Group. Love Highlands, Snowmass and Ajax, fabulous skiing at all three. Early March would be ideal there for weather and snow. Beautiful and not as crowded as I70. Problem is it's expensive...

Utah & Alta's Last day, 21 Apr 2024 and beyond

Was up at Snowbird again on May 9th. Still real fine winter snow/skiing. But spring is coming back in a day or two. This is the top of the Little Cloud Chair, looked and felt a bit like January 9th

Where and when to spend 3 weeks..

My first question is what pass are you going to buy, Epic, Ikon, Indy, or something else? Re Epic, I had one for a nine week cross-country skiing road trip I took in 2015. The last four weeks (mostly month of March) were in one condo in Silverthorne. It was a fine location for that pass. I...

Utah & Alta's Last day, 21 Apr 2024 and beyond

7 May 2024, another snowy, wintry day at Snowbird, UT. Only Peruvian chair ran due to winds and avi mitigation, so logistically challenging. A bigger crowd turned out than yesterday. I timed one lift wait - 19 mins. I've probably only waited that long for a chair a handful of times in nearly...

    Powder vs Spring skiing

OK, so I guess I like spring skiing and powder skiing about equally. They are both fun as heck! 6 May 2024 Snowbird, UT.

Utah & Alta's Last day, 21 Apr 2024 and beyond

Me on 6 May 2024, 21" powder day at Snowbird UT, heck of a morning, still dumping, tomorrow's gonna be even better. Only Peruvian Chair ran due to storm. Big crowd, but not that big, worst line wait maybe 10-15 mins. My buddy who took above photo with a frame grab: I'll post some more...

    Powder vs Spring skiing

Gonna really test the premise of this thread this week. Yesterday 4 May 2024 was an absolutely perfect spring ski day at Snowbird. Sunshine, 50 deg temps. Good surfaces that softened slowly and predictably across the various aspects of the mtn. Small crowds, walk-on tram rides. The kind of...

Utah & Alta's Last day, 21 Apr 2024 and beyond

I don't think there is any free skiing at age 70 in UT now. Nordic Valley may be free at 75. Senior freebies are not always easy to track and ski areas change prices and qualifying ages quite a bit. The two I skied this year for free were Massanutten, VA (4 times) and Monarch, CO (2 times)...

    California Spring 2024

1-2' coming to Snowbird/Solitude/Brighton between May 5-8. I'm taking today off because it's going to start very heavy/wet, but sounds like it could get colder and better 6th-8th..
