Northern CA Summer 2024 SkiTracks and High Temps

Big Tony, you might have seen my music posts on skitalk... I saw two shows this summer at Wolftrap near me. In June we saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. The show included an enjoyable mix of their new and old music - rock, blue grass and everything in between. Plant is very savvy picking...

Northern CA Summer 2024 SkiTracks and High Temps

Big Tony, glad you have some fun strategies to beat the heat. We had a very hot summer in the Wash DC area esp. from late June to late July, including a handful of 100F+ days with high humidity. It had been 8 years since 100 degrees in DC. We seemed to have turned the corner in the last week...

    Alta/Snowbird: 01/27/03 - Epicski Gathering

Who is the guy in the red EpicSki vest? Who is the guy in later photo with grey EpicSki hat and blue sweater. They look familiar. I lurked on EpicSki in early 2000s. Later got more involved and met many great people, some I still ski with at chat with on SkiTalk.

    Beer thread?

Good deal! I never heard of Firestone Walker Brewery until a couple weeks ago I saw a six pack of this stout in my local grocery store in Virginia. Kind of amazing how these microbrews can get distributed all around the country. This particular store has a huge beer/wine selection. The six...

    ski-air travel stories

I spent a week on Virgin Gorda in 1980 on my honeymoon. We stayed in a little cottage a stones throw from The Baths. I was a Navy Civilian for 30 years and worked a bit indirectly on P-8 issues. Wore a P-8 logo'd shirt about a week ago playing golf. My Dad was USNA graduate, class of 1943.

    Ski Area Count 2023 Update

@Sbooker you're too modest. That's a great list and very international, especially for someone who has to travel far to reach many of those destinations. You obviously love ski travel.

    American Election 2024

Don't like the idea of large numbers of political appointees taking the place of experienced US Govt career civil servants. That sort of thing always happens with new administrations, but not in huge numbers. Is this upcoming election a bigger deal than past elections? Kinda/sorta, but...

    American Election 2024

No doubt Trump is toxic. I'd much rather see somebody else leading the Republican Party, but there are a lot of Americans that think aspects of the Democratic party are toxic too. Toxic is in the eye of the beholder.

    American Election 2024

I too thought the electoral college was set up to help empower smaller states (population-wise) so that the votes from states with large urban populations did not always dominate US election results. The founders thinking being that always having the issues and preferences of urbanites win over...

    Vietnam

Family member went there on business one year ago. Took a number of colorful, tropical photos. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): Nha Trang beach about 250 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City Nha Trang again:

Tesla and Elon Musk Evolution Since 2017

I've never had any interest in summer skiing in South America. Too many fun summer activities going on. Of course, if someone offered me a free trip... ;) One of my daughters and her family were working for the USG in Ukraine when the war broke out. They had to be evacuated. Before they...

    ski-air travel stories

Family member finally got out of DCA on July 24. Flight was originally booked for July 21. This was on Delta, which apparently got the worst of the big windows glitch. Family member did get a free upgrade to 1st class, but that was small consolation.

One word for those coastal photos of the surf, wrecks and rocks: foreboding. Very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Currently not a good time for air travel. That Windows glitch still causing major disruptions. So far family member delayed two days, maybe more, getting out of Wash DC area.

    American Election 2024

Wild 8 days in American politics. Biden stepping aside. Looks like it will be Harris vs. Trump. I was age 14 when LBJ decided not to run for re-election in 1968. It was a shock, but turns out he knew what he was doing. He struggled with heart disease for the rest of his life and passed away...

    Antipodes Travel Trivia

Many moons ago I was a geography major at the University of Maryland. The exotic travel you undertake and related trivia you discuss is often of interest to me. However, I have to admit I had to brush-up on the concept of antipodes after this post. I discovered that the Kerguelen Islands sit...

    American Election 2024

Fair enough. By boosting his standing I meant increasing his chances of winning the election, partly out of sympathy for a survivor.

    American Election 2024

You're probably right that it will boost Trump's standing. But everybody loses with this kind of violence. It's anti-freedom and anti-democracy. I'm afraid the USA is notorious for this kind of gun violence and mass shootings. I'm conservative, but for the record I favor much stronger gun...

    American Election 2024

It seems like the media, including liberal operations like NY Times and WaPo, won't let go of the idea of Biden stepping down. I think it's better than 50/50 now that he will step aside from the 2024 race. Logically, that means Harris will take his place at the top of the ticket. She's young...
