?? There were people headed down to ski Vallee Blanche the entire time we were at the top of the peak. All those black dots on the snow are people. The clouds didn't roll in until mid-afternoon and were pretty high. The pictures I posted were taken just before 4pm. My daughter and I took...

Thanks for the link to your trip report. Glad you had good visibility. Having seen the entrance in person, can't quite decide if I would do Valle Blanche or not. My daughter and I went to Chamonix in April 2025 but that trip was always meant to be for sightseeing only. She spent the week...

The whining I'm hearing the most from Utah Ski Divas is from those who live in the Ogden Valley. These are people who moved to Utah from either the west coast or east coast because of the mountains for skiing and other recreational activities.

Wasn't suggesting buying skis. Makes more sense to rent wide skis when there is deep powder first to see if it makes enough difference. Here's my story when it comes to powder skis. When I started doing one trip out west per season fifteen years ago, I wasn't interested in lugging two pairs...

I was thinking more about the likelihood of rain, and freeze/thaw cycles during the ski season. Mt. Buller has used snow boxes for a while to start snowmaking early when temps are too warm for standard snowmaking.

From my reading about skiing in Australia in the past decade, that's similar to northeastern N. America.

Do yourself a favor and rent her some powder skis! For the fluffy stuff mid-100s could be enough. I'm petite and the widest I've rented at Alta is 112 underfoot before I had much deep powder experience. They were 5-10cm longer than the all-mountain skis I was using back then. Given the extra...

Bill knows that. It's an easy day drive from Albuquerque. He really likes the town of CB. He's been to CB more than once when he didn't ski any upper mountain terrain. Booked in a lodge in town this trip. I'm sure he'll have a good time. My late Jan into early Feb trip was cancelled weeks...

Are you over 68? Monarch sells a season pass for $25 to people 69+. Monarch is opening up the new lift and terrain in No Name Bowl this weekend. My ski buddy who lives in Albuquerque will be skiing Monarch for a couple days before heading to Crested Butte in the next week. The plan was made...

The Fairbank Group only operates Bromley. There is a long-time owner who bought it in 1986. Bromley dates from the 1930s. There are real estate projects ongoing at Cranmore. The Fairbank father and son have shown that it's possible to build a successful business model that incorporates real...

Being relatively close doesn't necessarily mean a joint pass makes any sense. Alta and Snowbird didn't have a joint pass for a long time. In North Carolina, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain are perhaps 30 minutes apart on dry roads. They both have long-time ownership of over 50 years and...

For a sense of who the owner of Berkshire East and Catamount is, check out the interview with Storm Skiing Journal from 2023. There have been other interviews before that. Jon Schaeffer is one of the son's of the midwest man who bought Berkshire East in 1976. Jon left NYC quite a while ago...

When I got interested in the Berkshires in general, I got the book Lost Ski Areas of the Berkshires, by Jeremy Davis, 2018. When the Fairbanks bought Brodie the longterm idea was to build a $60 million 4-season resort, including a water park. They started by having a joint lift ticket and...

I did a storm chasing trip to Jiminy Peak during the period my daughter was in school near Boston. Had planed to fly for a long weekend to attend a dance recital. Changed my arrival to a few days earlier in order to get to JP before the storm made driving on the highway a bad idea. Landed at...
