Does anyone really care about a Greek Peak TR?

PDQ, I apologize for the hijack, but TT, I see you're from Pennsylvania. A good friend of mine is a patroller at Swain. They've been leased for the season by the operators of Ski Denton. Have you been to either of those places? Swain is another small, somewhat neglected hill with out much...

    Camel's Hump State Park/Monroe Trail, VT 1/17/2010

Great TR, thanks! The navigation aids available to those pilots are nothing compared to that handheld GPS you carried. Funny what 65 years of technology advancement can do.

Does anyone really care about a Greek Peak TR?

I sure do, PQ. Sitting here in my drab little corporate cube in Rochester, at least I get to live vicariously reading about your adventure in the snow. Besides, when I do finally get back to GP, I'll feel like I know the trails a little. I was there once for a first-timer's deal. Three days...

So what did Santa bring you?

Not to be confused with 'bringing in the sheaves'. Those are more agricultural in nature.

oops? You did include the length, unless my eyes are bleary from 'working' all day after a ten day break!

    heated ski gloves

Thanks for the correction, rfwarren. I thought about that a little after reading your comment and rereading my post, and realized that I don't wear liners with gloves, but only with mittens.

    heated ski gloves

I agree with rfwarren. Mittens on the coldest days. You could also try silk (or synthetic) glove liners. These help a lot, and you get to keep your dexterity. For batteries, although they may be environmentally less desirable, I'd go with good old alkaline batteries in a standard form factor...

recommendations to learn telemark early season

You guys got me all fired up now! Last year, I decided to try telemark, so I treated myself to a two-day seminar at Killington. As it happened, I was the only student, so it amounted to two full days of 1-on-1 instruction for the price of a two day seminar. I'm afraid that I kept reverting to...

    Suunto S6 problem

That would have been nice. They indicated that the unit is discontinued, which I suppose translates into none in stock, along with no 'repair parts'. (In reality, I doubt they'd try to do board-level repair on it even if they had parts.) The normal repair process would probably be replace the...

    Suunto S6 problem

Thanks for the reply, Patrick. I'd forgotten about this post. Suunto indicated that the unit was still under warranty, so I sent it back. They have an interesting warranty policy, I suppose. The tech verified that the problem exists, but because they don't have repair parts, the best they...

    Classic Eastern ski trails

Maybe admin should move this to a new thread. I'm not very experienced, and have only been to a few of these mountains, but if I understand the rules of the game, how about these? Sunday River Goat Path (or are 6-foot wide trails a little too narrow for inclusion in this list?) Blue, but I'd...

    Classic Eastern ski trails

I've just started treeskiing myself. It reminds me somewhat of XC, which I've done since I was a freshman in high school. I prefer the tree lined narrow winding trails over the big football-field wide 'trails' that run top to bottom in a straight line. I need to explore more of the so-called...

    Swain is closing

OMG - RIT? I graduated from high school in 75, and went to RIT for chem tech from then to 78. I didn't go there for my PE requirement, but I wish I had. I didn't start alpine skiing until a few years ago. Your post brings me back. Tom

    Swain is closing

An email from a buddy who's a patroller there: (Verbatim - I didn't fix the typo on the domain name.) Sad news. Tom Dear Swain Patrollers, It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Swain Resort. The business will be listed for sale with the intent of finding an owner who...

    Suunto S6 problem

Update: I contacted Suunto and they told me that I should absolutely be able to switch modes at will while the log is accumulating data. My unit is still under warranty, so when I finish the season sometime next month I'll send it off for repair. I'll let you know how it turns out. Tom

    Suunto S6 problem

J, You're absolutely right about the mode change. I ran two experiments yesterday; I recorded several hours of logs - on one trial I left the unit in skiing mode, and on the second trial I switched to time mode while the logbook was recording. Sure enough, the first log was several hours...
