Killington Confirms May 15 Closing Date

FWIW, Sugarloaf SUCKED until March. Almost nothing in December. Lots of clear and cold in January. A little snow in February. About normal in March though we had several inches of rain too. Below normal snowfall for April. Averages don't mean much at the 'Loaf though. I think I remember...

sugarloaf, me, wildcat , nh, killington vt-4-20/21

Nah. Sugarloaf sucks. It's too cold and too far away. And it's true, they DO lie like a rug about which lifts are running and which trails are open, to the point where I usually make sure my skins are in my bag when I ski there. (Which isn't often, because of how badly they suck). Everyone...

How do you cut through crust???

Patience... Just let the snow turn the ski. Of course, if you HAVE to turn, then you're going to have to use some muscle to pull them up out of the snow, turn them, and punch them back down through the crust. But in an ideal world you just put them on edge and let them run through their...

Bluebird day (at first). Caught the second tram car of the day up to the piste Charles Brozon. Nice snow just off-piste there. Here's Lobstah on a south-facing aspect: Here's me after a north-east facing pitch: And the reasons for that, 20 seconds prior: That was literally 30-60...

Les Houches - 3/5/05: Hello from Chamonix!

The old saying for skiing in North America is that if it's hell on the highway it's going to be heaven on the hill. Well... 36 very trying hours after leaving the house we arrived at our hotel in Chamonix. On the up side, our connecting flight was delayed because of snow, and it snowed in...

    Widespread Major Winter Storm Forecast

Started in central Maine sometime early this morning. Looks like it'll be all done by late afternoon. <grumble>

They're sheltered by the base lodge. It really was howling pretty good. Blowing snow coming in around the base lodge windows and 100mph+ winds reported at the top of Spillway. A gust also cracked the top half of my ski box while I was putting my skis back in. Folded it like a taco...

All lifts on windhold, all day. Things did not get skied-off. Soft snow in the trees. I made two runs from about the top of Double-Runner longside. The halfpipe was very icy - I couldn't hold an edge up to the lip.

For myself, I'm spending the same in the lodge as ever. Nothing. The other businesses in the base village are doing OK out of me though, and the bars have been very busy apres ski. So much so that a couple times I've opted to just drive home and have a beer there instead. I expect they will...

    Need ski binding/boot advice!

Despite manufacturers furious protestations to the contrary, bindings are bindings. Pick something that you're in the middle of the DIN range of, and you're set. Sure, some will take a bigger bump before releasing than others, but the differences really are pretty minimal. More money...

what have you done for me lately?

Just because I don't post anything doesn't mean I don't appreciate seeing your reports and videos Mapadu. BTW, I took my dog "swimming" in some local BC on Saturday. Winter does much better than my dog does. I could have used your pacifier-cam on Sunday - was skiing some THICK stuff that just...

The locals were powder starved. This is eminently apparent, as TeleLobsterGrrl reported to me that everything on-trail was tracked-out by Friday at noon. By today everything that was not groomed was bumped. Very bumped. Everything on-map is tracked out and bumped. Most things off-map are...

    Major Winter Storm Details

You and 10,000 of your best friends, most of whom tracked it all out Friday. Give Burke a try sometime. 2/3rds the snow, but 1/10th of the people.

    Big Squaw, ME - 2/12/05

TeleLobsterGrrrl, Moxie Dawg and I drove up to Greenville to ski Big Squaw today. There was lots of untracked left on the main mountain. Of course not having a lift probably has something to do with it. Sad to see, that. All the chairs from the double are stacked next to the lift base. The...
