    Winter...is back

Yes, I’m trying to formulate a plan to get me some. Work and family commitments mean I am restricted to a day-trip from Boston, either Saturday or Sunday. Saturday will clearly be best for powder, but means leaving at 5am right in the middle of the storm. Realistically, even Sunapee will...

    Black Mountain NH 1/26/12

Sorry, I lied - it was $81 for the lift tickets, not $71. Just noticed that as I cleaned out the credit card receipts. $49 adult, $32 teen. So I guess that relegates it to just a medium bargain. (by comparison Wildcat would have been $125 for the two of us)

    Black Mountain NH 1/26/12

Four fathers and our 13 year-old sons headed up to New Hampshire for our annual ski-trip. One of the families has a condo in Jackson, which has all the attributes of a great little ski village and is just far enough away from the masses of North Conway. Overall, conditions are really not...

    Utah Weather

In Marc’s defense (well, this is a turnaround) I’m figuring that the sign-off was pretty much tongue-in-cheek and a reference to earlier posts rather than a dig at socal. If so, nicely played – I was searching for the ‘wry smile” emoticon. I’m not entering into the data discussion, however...

I admit that we could charitably say Jtran’s post was written quickly and he didn’t mean to call Evren a liar. But it’s definitely an easy mistake to read it that way and so maybe we can forgive Evren's strong reaction. More importantly, how much of that response was maybe just a delayed...

Evren – I also appreciate your posts and would encourage you to hang in there. Every board needs diversity of views and I enjoy your posts (and your humor) Why? - Just because others are rude and dismissive, that's not an argument for us to be the same. I used to think the predominantly...

    UtahSLC Lodging

If you have enough going to rent a house, then you might want to think about renting in BCC, which still gives you access to multiple areas (albeit slightly longer drive if you go outside BCC) but with a more alpine environment. SLC is a great place to live, but for me it always feels like a...

    Greek Peak, NY 12-30-12

How cool is that? - CO resident back to see the family for the holidays (reading between the lines) scores some great powder at the same time! Good for you - looks like you had fun and interesting to see some shots of Greek Peak.

Waterville Valley and Burke 12/28 and 12/29

Agreed. Blues seem to be the trails which vary most from mountain to mountain - I was just saying that most of the blues at Burke tend towards the steeper and narrower compared to Waterville, for example, or Mount Snow/Stratton are other examples which come to mind. Which makes Burke a good...

Waterville Valley and Burke 12/28 and 12/29

Skied Waterville Valley the day after they got what look liked about 6-9” out of the last storm. Coverage was good, with hero snow in most places. It was a little more blown off and icy on the (looker’s) right side of the ridge, down Tippecanoe. A few crowds – probably 10-15 minutes waits...

    Jay or Burke on Saturday?

So after a day skiing in NH on Friday (Waterville or maybe Cannon), we have a deal at a hotel in St Johnsbury for Friday night this week (the 28th) which gives us two tickets to either Jay or Burke on Saturday. Jay is 60 minutes away from the hotel Vs 30 minutes to Burke and is also an extra...

Where to spend next winter on a budget?

OTOH, you could easily argue the opposite. If you have the luxury of a full season to ski, you have the option of choosing which days you ski. So you can take advantage of quiet periods, while taking it easy and/or using inside knowledge to avoid crowds at busy times. So in some ways I would...

    Breck & Vail, Mar 9-11

Yes, although we didn't time it quite right for the snow the week before, we were still pretty lucky on the timing of this trip. As a group of dads, we needed to plan a little in advance and, this year particularly, aiming for a resort with some high terrain paid off. For the same reason...

    Breck & Vail, Mar 9-11

Back from a 3-day trip to CO with four friends. Stayed at Breck and skied two days there and one at Vail on Saturday. Overall, conditions were better than expected, and for a group of East Coast & Midwest residents, pretty satisfactory. Bright sunshine, no wind and 30-40 degree days are...

    Gosh Darn It!!!

So any weather followers want to offer an opinion as to prospects for New Hampshire today and tomorrow? I'm thinking that NH would be the best shot for a day-trip from Boston, but it's a tough call. Cannon is calling for 8 - 12 today, then 3 - 6 more tomorrow. OTOH, NWS has totals about 50%...

    SLC 1/22-1/25

James - that is very funny... No smilie will really do that one justice. I'll leave the locals to comment on the real post, but had to tell you how much that made me laugh

    Alta 12/16

JTran, in that case, it’s great to be able to thank you again. Your help was very well-timed as I was reluctant to get more in trouble by keeping going further down with no obvious way out. And the shot below that area was fun, with some of the best snow of the day. I did it a lot slower...

    Alta 12/16

So they opened no new terrain today, but the day was still pretty good. There was good snow, no wind, temps just about at freezing, and the sun even made a few appearances. All in all, the mountains looked pretty good. Obviously, most of the snow was cut-up powder and it felt a little heavy...

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I guess I'll check the website in the morning and keep my eyes on the High T. Whatever happens, i think it will be a good day.

So any thoughts from you locals on where to look for openings tomorrow (Wednesday)? This may be my one trip out west this winter :-({|= (that's what remodeling a kitchen will do for you), and it's only one day, so I'm looking to milk it for all it's worth...
