    Alta, UT 2/1/10

Impressive. Most impressive. My guess is that Marc_C has the Powder Hound's Guide to Alta. I assume Bounous' Chute is named after Junior Bounous, the long, long, long-time director of the ski school at Snowbird. I had the pleasure of meeting Junior at ski instructor training at Snowbird - in...

    Intrawest selling off Panorama, too

On a related note Intrawest has now sold the Village at Squaw Valley: http://www.saminfo.com/news/article.php?tid=4417. Makes you wonder if we'll ever see such an explosion of ski-related development in our lifetimes, what with the baby boomers gradually becoming less of an impact (and current...

    Last Weekend at Mt Bachelor

Great pics. bluebird + powder + no crowds = nirvana. Pretty tough to get all three at once, regardless of where you are... It's probably better to remain a 'ginger' - means more fresh tracks for you.

Tahoe vs. SLC for President's Day Week?

I've really got to disagree with you, Tony. All of Utah is now sitting on a solid base - most terrain is open or will be upon stability. Thus, California's better overall snow year is pretty mute. Given Utah's higher probability of refresher storms + better snow consistency I would go to Utah...

    1/22-1/25 Utah TR

Sorry, I meant Summit... The pics are still being posted by members of our group - so far only a couple are interesting. I'll try to get better at this on future trips.

Tahoe vs. SLC for President's Day Week?

I'm not sure why Tahoe resorts feel more crowded than Utah - from what I can tell the skier numbers are similar for each region (~4 million), and each region has around the same number of resorts (10ish). My theory is that Tahoe gets more slammed on weekends (especially over holidays) since the...

Tahoe vs. SLC for President's Day Week?

That's a lot of driving... Why not fly? In any case I would lean towards SLC. Either Tahoe or Utah will have a good snow base, so no worries there. Utah is more likely to get fresh snow and retain soft snow conditions. Brian Head is having a great year and would break up the drive nicely...

    1/22-1/25 Utah TR

4 days, 18 people, 4 ski resorts, good food, good beer, mindblowing movies and great snow. Perfect trip. I'll post pics later if I end up with any good ones. Friday - took advantage of QuickStart at Park City. Parked downtown to take advantage of the Town Lift (seems like more people should...

    Cottonwood Heights Apres Ski

If you like seafood then the Market Street Oyster Bar is an option (2985 E Cottonwood Pkwy). It's right on the creek, has nice views of the mountains and good seafood/wine selection. If that's too upscale then The Cotton Bottom Inn is a good choice for a more traditional bar (2820 East 6200...

    Colorado lift ticket prices!!!

The market simply wants what Colorado offers. The market as a whole wants cute towns with expensive shops, excellent restaurants, ski-in lodging, nightlife and nice spas. The market skiers want nicely groomed, long intermediate cruisers with a good chance of good snow cover. That is the...

    My big West trip

Sounds like a great trip. Your dad is right about Southern Utah... If you go to Moab DON'T miss Dead Horse Point State Park. It's a short drive and most people don't know it's there. The views are absolutely amazing - IMHO more impressive than the Grand Canyon. If you can pull it off and if...

    AVY Safety Inbounds?

Hmm. I don't think I like those odds assuming you're including the population of the 'Axis of Evil' countries. I think I'm gonna go buy a transceiver and a shovel...

    New England Snow Holes

Even with the rain events it seems probable that the NE is actually scoring higher (at this point of the season) on Tony's Snow Conditions ranking than Northern/Central Colorado... Not to change the subject too much, but I'm curious about the 4.3% of wet snow months seen at Snowbird. I'm...

    2009/2010 Season Progress Report

Wholeheartedly agree. The bestsnow site is fun keeping up with. Of course #'s don't tell the whole story, but combined with the trip reports anyone can get a good idea of a) where's good now and b) where has the best chance of being good for an upcoming trip. In addition, the qualitative data...

    Super Pass available to all

FYI - the new Snowbird iphone app allows a quick way to see the highway status. It also has a the latest doppler radar plus the usual snow conditions and weather report. Pretty slick... A really fun app would be something that tracked and mapped your elevation on a regular basis and...

    Deceptive Advertising at Ski Resorts

Vertical drop and skiable area are also deceptively advertised by some resorts. Kirkwood, for example, claims a 2000' vertical. However, the true lift-served vertical is only 1650', with the remainder being hike-only. Several others do the same. Snowbasin, in some of my older ski guides...

    Okay Where

I would second that. If a significant other is a non-skier I think your biggest priority should be making her/him happy, whatever that takes (since I imagine you would want to go on more trips in the future). So, scouring for an Aspen deal would perhaps be the best initial course of action...

Trip Report: Purgatory @ DMR 12/31/09, Wolf Creek 1/2/10

The new Mammoth flights are tantalizing, but a little frustrating. It's now super cheap from the Bay Area to travel to Mammoth (via San Jose), but you lose an entire day on both ends since the arrival time is around noon in both directions. A 55 minute flight ends up chewing up a day of skiing...
