I'll take that as a compliment - and I'll try to make the real trip report even longer and more detailed. Glad to hear my bitching about the inversion found ears. I mean, I could keep going on (and on) about it, but it sounds like it found resonance and my reputation is ensured.

This is a little premature, but I wanted to see if you guys have any better ideas for a trip I've planned. (I will be hitting you up in later, in mid-January, to get your inside take on best conditions as we'll be open to last minute changes.) Note this turned out to be a pretty long post...

Ya, I have my own strategy for Alta, but still I'm flying somewhat blind only visiting a few times per year (how do I get to Eddy's High, again?). That extra 20% is pretty critical... If it's not superb conditions, then finding that one run on Baldy Shoulder can make the whole trip for me...

Well, you've got to be in-the-know (and most casual skiers aren't). You've got to know what they're opening and when (I'm not sure how you guys know when each rope drop is going to happen???). You've got to know what traverse to take and when to exit the traverse. And you've got to know the...

Dammit... I'm jealous. It's just awesome you can get untracked like that days after the last storm.

Skiing from Boulder (p.1, then Random Topics)

True, true. I missed the avalanche distinction. With drownings and all other causes I bet surfing claims more lives than inbounds skiing... Inbounds avalanche deaths have got to be in the low single digits per year.

From some quick searches the death rate for in-bounds skiing looks to be at least 10x that of shark deaths... The National Ski Areas Association http://www.nsaa.org/nsaa/press/facts-ski-snbd-safety.asp states the annual average at around 40 deaths - I assume this is inbounds based on the way...

Skiing from Boulder (p.1, then Random Topics)

They're definitely beautiful, but all the Mediterranean beaches I have been to (France/Italy) are rocky - no sand. Plus, they're much more crowded than L.A. beaches - at many you have to rent spots. Plus, you can forget about surfing - the surf is practically nonexistent. The area from...

Thanks for the great pics. Gotta assume the run count at skiutah.com for alta will shoot up tomorrow (42/116 currently???)...

You're right - there's probably any number of places near the Alps that absolutely blow away anywhere in the U.S. (or the world) in terms of resort access, scenery, culture, food, nightlife, etc. But, as Tony would likely state, there are few (if any) resorts in the Alps where you're going to...

http://www.airnow.gov/ is a good reference for air quality. You can see that the Wasatch Front is in an inversion that will likely get worse and worse until next week's storm (if it materializes). Those vaunted mountain views are already in a murky haze... Interesting that the Tahoe region...

OK. I stand (somewhat) corrected, at least on the "weeks" of 100-deg days. 23 days of 95 degree or hotter days, though, makes for a pretty darn hot summer. And, no, low humidity doesn't make things magically comfortable when it's 95 degrees. On the inversions, though, I will stand my ground...

Skiing from Boulder (p.1, then Random Topics)

In the spirit of really hijacking this thread... Downtown SLC does seem to be progressing into a livable, active small city. It will never have the diversity (of people, things to do) or liveliness of many larger metro areas, but it's big enough that it's hard to argue there's nothing to do...

Skiing from Boulder (p.1, then Random Topics)

When you factor in that Denver is already 2 hours to the front range areas that extra 20 minutes is a pretty painful proposition... At that point you're really a destination skier since hitting a powder day is darn near impossible due to the extra time for traffic/conditions. I know there are...

Great trip report. Only in Utah... Tough to ski in that kind of cold (especially the high speed runs you mention - definitely a good test of your outerwear). Here's praying for a couple feet over the next week or so. Please, I'm begging!

    Proposed Solitude expansion

http://www.sltrib.com/Business/ci_13860390 Probably won't/shouldn't happen, but it would propel Solitude into stronger competition with the big boys. It's powder potential would nearly double with the new terrain in Silver Fork. Interesting that Alta/Solitude are conspiring for an...

    Utah snow quality

If November stays relatively dry, which looks possible, would this be the worst ever November for Alta and Utah at large? I thought '07/'08 was the worst (and it seems this year is still below that year's total), though I'm not sure about '76/'77... I remember years growing up when the PC...

    Alta Delays Opening

Sleds are next on my agenda. Then after that I'll fight for my right to marry my rhinoceros. Ahhhh, marriage and skiing at Alta - the last bastions of sanctity left on the planet...

    Alta Delays Opening

I both ski and board and I ski Alta when I can so I don't feel particularly personally 'discriminated' against. I do find it very unfortunate that as a destination skier it's nearly impossible to ski Alta since many of my friends that I go on ski trips with solely snowboard and thus Alta is a...

    Alta Delays Opening

I find it impossible to defend Alta's snowboarder ban anymore. The arguments for remaining ski-only are easily discounted and the voices in favor of the ban sound more and more snobbish and elitist as time goes by. Are boarders' side-slips and post-hole hikes more damaging than skiers...
