20" deep of "champagne" powder... Video time!

Hi you all... sorry if I was very quiet the last weeks.... lot of work at job + on ZS... Here is my video of last weekend at La Réserve. I know most of you have already seen a lot of pics of powder, chutes, cliffs, glades, etc of this mountain, but I think this is a seriously good video to...

Laurentian ( Quebec ) Tremblant to MSSI Report

Opening is scheduled on december 24 ! With the snowstorm predicted for this friday, the 24 opening is getting extremely possible, as the mountain has already a good 8" of snow base. I may be there with a little luck on the 24, as I'm leaving for La Malbaie only on the 25th. I would like to be...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

Honestly, I'm still wondering things, because Double Dipper really didn't seem steep and yes, it's the large trail with the canyon quad over it... but I admit that there is no way West 70 has 32 degrees...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

Ok, I have something to admit... according to what I calculated yesterday, the steepest trail of Killington would be... Double Dipper.... according to Google Earth, still... I measured an average of 32,1 degrees for a part of the pitch of about 500' high. I'm very surprised, though, as this...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

I called my father (who was teaching mathematics when he was my age) and he helped me to find the way to calculate the degrees of trails... I just want to ensure something, Tony. Do you think the "length" on Google Earth is the "flat side" of the triangle or the "inclined side" of the triangle...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

Same thing here ! Is it with trigonometry ?? (I know you're a king of the maths, Tony....) If yes, I'm really poor in this kind of maths, but do you have a formula that we could use with MS Excel or something like that, to calculate the steepness of the trails ?

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

Lower Ovation is steeper than anything at St-Sauveur, I agree totally on that one. Is it the steepest trail of the mountain, however ? It's steep... but not that much (35 degrees or a little bit more ?) It made me think a little bit to the "Surprenante" of the Massif du Sud, but with a very...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

I would like to say that I didn't compare the quality of skiing of both mountains, but ONLY AND ONLY the steepness of the canyon trails of Killington VS the steepness of the Nordique at St-Sauveur after someone told that West 70 was a novice trail while it's 25 degrees steep. St-Sauveur is not...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

I will precise that I wasn't counting Cascade Headwall and Downdraft Headwall, but only below Upper Great Northern. Here is a photo for the steepness of the "Nordique" And as a comparison basis, here is the "pitch" of cascade photo taken late afternoon 2 sunday ago, it's why the bare...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

In fact, both trails are black trails... and real black ones in my opinion. Hill 70 in the lower part is probably steeper than the double black trails of the canyon of Killington (that I skied 2 weeks ago) (Cascade, Downdraft, Double Dipper and East Fall) so we're quite far from an easy trail...

MSS to open tomorrow saturday nov 12th

Mont Saint-Sauveur is seriously talking about an opening tomorrow morning. It's not sure at 100%, but with the temperatures below freezing point this afternoon + the cold weather of last night and the coming night, they're trying to open as soon as tomorrow morning. Cool :) (oops, just seen...

    meanwhile in the north...

Just as we missed a 8" snowstorm here (which finally felt in water), I knew today that the Valinouët, in Saguenay Lac St-Jean received a lot of snow in the last days and looks like there is a snow base of more than 18" actually... hummm, sounds great ! We should have some pics of the mountain...

A video from Sunday at Killington

Chris is using a dvd-cam, with 16/9 ratio... but it's really not the kind of camera that I would bring in some extreme trails while skiing ;) Personnaly, I use a canon A75 with 3.1mpx (should be for you something like 200$ now I guess) and even though you couldn't have a perfect quality on a...

Loon moves forward with South Peak expansion

wow... I remember on my very first trail map of the ski area, more than a decade ago, these trails were marked as "future trails" (some even already have a name) Tough to believe that finally, the project will be done !!

Killington VT 10/30/2005 - Closing Day

Thanks for the good words, Knuckle Dragger ! The hike to Catwalk is not long (less than 5 minutes) and about 100' high above the top of the gondola. The view from there is wonderful and the trail really rocks ! It's a short but steep narrow pitch entering in the snow ghosts and turning to reach...

Killington VT 10/30/2005 - Closing Day

I don't only remember it... I also told the story to the other zoneskiers present sunday... ... and I added the fact that you skied down Downdraft Headwall completely on rocks somewhere at the end of may, in the 80s... :D

Killington VT 10/30/2005 - Closing Day

Well, actually, we got some difficulties as I was with a guy who is born in France, a girl who doesn't have a driving license and when the guy asked me what was my city of birth, I told without thinking "Laval" while I'm born in Sept-Îles in my very young days......... so they checked all the...

Killington VT 10/30/2005 - Closing Day

Well, a short report here, This was my first day at Killington... after bitching about it for years like others for the lack of early/late skiing in the season. Well, I guess I will shut up after having skied some incredible conditions in october there yesterday ! I'm sure saturday was 10x...
