Utah, SLC, Alta, Solitude, Snowbird

Both Alta and Solitude have cross country skiing. There's also backcountry cross country skiing on the road in mill creek canyon. Snowbasin near ogden also has xc skiing, as does White Pine at Park City.

Alta, UT 4/23/06 - Closing day

Mammoth probably has better spring skiing type snow than LCC. Utah does not as frequently have good corn skiing. We get a lot of mashed potatoes. I'd say we get more powder days though. I'll be better able to comment after this weekend. I'm headed to mammoth saturday, it'll be my first time there.

Alta, UT 4/23/06 - Closing day

I was up there too, can't miss an event like that. Turns out that girl in the snow queen suit is my (ex girl)friend. She had little kids wanting to take pictures with her, somehow they'd always end up running away crying. Supertelewoman is another friend, and the guy in back of the snow queen...

    Solitude, UT 4/8/06

Did you happen to see a guy and a girl in solitude jackets ("greeters") outside the moonbeam lodge when you got there in the morning? If so, ..i was the guy. The media people made up about half the people on the mtn. I think honeycomb was pretty baked at that point, maybe some creamy pow in...

    Snowbird, UT 3/19/06

Yeah, corn-ish. Just about enough melt/freeze cycles by then. Should be a good day to carve it up, maybe hit some springtime bumps.

    Snowbird, UT 3/19/06

Agreed - Definitely an awesome day today. I don't think the snow was the best, probably not in the top 10 for me. But ..with this season..there's been so many bottomless pow days that it's tough to rank em. We were in an undisclosed canyon at a resort that shall remain anonymous except to say...

    Sunshine or Fernie for Feb12-17

Hey John@ et al, How are things shaping up there now that you've got some more snow? Is coverage good at the banff resorts or still thin? I'll be at sunshine on the 9th of feb. Got any recommendations of areas to head? Not asking for stashes (although they're welcome :) ), but just some good...

    Alta/Snowbird, UT 1/22/06

That is one sick line. This was an awesome weekend. Conditions are great even by utah standards, which is saying a lot. Hopefully the snow will turn back on this weekend :D

    Alta/Solitude video

Looks like another dissapointing trip to Utah.... havent you heard that skiing in colorado is much better? Also, with respect to the sunset peak/rocky point area, keep in mind Marc's emphasis on avalanche safety. I dont know if you had beacons or not Skimore, but that is backcountry area, not...

    Backcountry shots around SLC

I dont know a whole lot about the area around there. I think you might be ok spending most of your time "in bounds", they have a TON of terrain up there. I'm not sure how much non private land there is to tour on around powder mountain. They have a great base up there (100"+), but im sure you...

Straight from SLC airport to ...

I would recommend brighton or alta on the salt lake side, brighton would probably have more of the blue groomers you're looking for. The Park City Area resorts, ..which, despite being on the other side of the range, are not much farther, (10-15min more?), and are also good. Snowbird has no easy...

    Wasatch Interconnect musings

Hey now, be nice. They do a LOT of good things around here, and are very necessary, given the green light the republicans of utah would give to any sort of development project. And anyway, it's not just the Save Our Canyons members that would have a problem, ..that amount of expansion would...

Jay Peak Web Page Conditions Report: 12/02/05

Yeah, in the videos it looked more like shin-knee deep. You know how untrustworthy those telemarkers are.

On the forecasting snow topic, ..i always feel its better to err on the conservative side. This does 2 things: 1)It balances meteorologists' tendency to get excited about snow...

    Alta, UT 12/3/05

Heard it was sick at Alta today. 9500ft in the Cottonwoods received about 14", but it always feels like more there. I was over doing laps in low angle bc in Big cottonwood. It was real nice, and the low density of the powder made it nicer. More on the way later tonight and tomorrow, Sunday...

Lake effect a big factor this year for snow-belt resorts?

I believe "official" estimates are about %15 of alta's snowfall. Not sure how they determined that. There are several factors that determine lake effect potential. Lake to higher level temp differences and wind direction are the biggest factors. For Great Salt Lake effect snow, you want a lake...

    Utah Ski Weather.com

Yeah, it was nice. Got out 3 out of the 4 day weekend. Unfortunately I was getting bored on the groomers, so Friday i tried [GASP] snowboarding  . I got the hang of it, towards the end of the day i was getting tired, shoulda stopped. I was on the last 20 ft of the last run of the day...

    Utah Ski Weather.com

Shameless promotion of website: I know there's at least a few of you around here that would find this site useful. UtahSkiWeather.com has resort-specific forecasts for major resorts in Northern Utah. It also has a backcountry forecast, in depth weather and snow conditions discussions, ...and...

    Alta, UT 10/4/2005

Way to be. Glad to see we are like minded. We didnt get up there till about 6:30. Musta got about 10 runs in, most in the dark dimly lit by spot lights near the base, too bad most were ~25 vft. I had about 3 turns that actually felt like an ok powder day. 8-10" Here's my only decent pic...

    Alta 9-17

Yeah, that snow patch was totally east coast style :) The heels were not locked, but no tele turns were made in that crap. Def one of the worst ski days ive had, but still excellent :)

    Alta 9-17

Headed up to Alta saturday for some very late season turns. Was in a rush, so at the time gunsight seemed like the best plan... Not as wide as i thought it would be. The steep slopes on either side were super tough to maintain a grip on in sandals ..doh Steep enough that i coudnt get down to...
