    Mont Tremblant 2025-26 Season

Yes if it was the water content I saw in Beaver Creek in 2015. Usually those manmade whales are super thick base building snow.

    More Telluride Mismanagement

It's only 13% open now with the lean start, not much of a loss. Only 2017-18 in the past 22 years was this bad in Telluride at Christmas.

    Crystal Mountain, Dec. 22, 2025

When in doubt the answer to that question is usually 1976-77, which had 10 inches Nov/Dec snowfall at Bachelor. I can verify from snowfall totals that no other seasons since then had Nov/Dec snowfall totals of less than 49 inches, and one year that had 50 was open by mid-December. The...

Bachelor and Hood Meadows opened today for the first time this season, but very limited.

    Galapagos Diving and/or Snorkeling

Snorkeling pics are from the point-and-shoot Olympus Tough camera, as was the sea lion video above. Turtles are seen on occasion on many scuba dives, but nowhere have I seen as many at one time as here. That's Liz' nauticam at upper left and 7 turtles in total. Taking a breath: Light angle...

Divemaster video clips of hammerheads at Gordon Rocks: https://www.facebook.com/525322981/videos/pcb.10162794418502982/870584248812229 Visibility was so-so and the video is very hazy at any distance. Our first sighting was swimming over about 10 of them. The opening clip has two in the haze...

Tesla and Elon Musk Evolution Since 2017

All of the newer models have electric door openers from the inside. Ours has a lever and certainly feels mechanical, though the outside handle is electric and recedes flush into the door. The newer models do have an emergency manual door release inside in case the electric power fails...

    Northern VT: what a start

Perhaps in the valleys but not the ski areas. Trails counts since the rain have declined modestly if at all, though I'm sure surfaces were not too pleasant. They will probably recover some with snowmaking plus a few inches natural this week. Percent open now vs. Dec. 16: Jay 91% vs. 94%...

Lake Manly Reformed in Death Valley, Dec. 14, 2025

I would not expect that. The vast majority of winter storms have dumped their precipitation on the Sierra and the west side of the Panamint Range before they get to Death Valley. However the lakes may last awhile because we are in the low evaporation season. The pics after the August 2023...

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

Stuart has two podcasts with Geoff Hathaway of Magic, both of them earlier than Harvey's. https://www.stormskiing.com/p/podcast-4-magic-mountain-president https://www.stormskiing.com/p/covid-19-and-skiing-podcast-3-magic Plattekill was also a very early Stuart podcast...

Lake Manly Reformed in Death Valley, Dec. 14, 2025

Liz wanted to see this. She recalled reading about Lake Manly reforming after Hurricane Hilary in August 2023. The flood damage was severe enough to close Death Valley National Park for 2 months, and when it reopened some people kayaked there. The November atmospheric river that snowed 3+...

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

I would say that for the broad public, mellower eastern mountains are surely more user friendly for mountain biking than Mammoth is. And from summer pics I see the landing surface if you fall looks more forgiving.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Rain/snow line in the Wasatch forecast: The Wasatch problem remains that it is consistently on the edge of storms with no real direct hits so far. And when it's on the southern edge like the above forecast the rain/snow line is higher than normal.

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

That Mammoth forecast of 4-5 feet is moving into the 3-5 day credible window. It may take a few days of snow stabilization to get everything open but I would be astounded if Mammoth is not very close to 100% by Jan. 2.

Challenges of Running An Independent NE Ski Area

Yes. On July 4, 1993 Mammoth had 5 feet of snow on its frontside while the backside was mostly melted out. So they offered skiing and mountain biking from the top on the same day, and then 8-year-old Adam wanted to do both. This was probably the first time either of us had been on a mountain...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

Whitewater is farther north and more importantly has base elevation 5,400 feet, though the Glory chair's base is 4,600. It gets as much snow as Fernie and far less rain.

Lindsey Vonn: St. Moritz FIS Downhill Win!

In these athletic GOAT discussions, I view a distinction between peak value and career value. Tiger (peak) vs. Nicklaus (career) in golf is a classic example. You can argue peak quarterbacks but Brady's career GOAT status seems unassailable. Conversely in basketball there are lively...

    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

I view the 4 largest Kootenay areas as a group: Red to the NW, Schweitzer to the SW, Fernie to the NE and Whitefish to the SE. They generally get the same weather with two important exceptions: 1. Fernie gets more precipitation than the other 3. 2. Whitefish has slightly higher elevation range...

    Galapagos Diving and/or Snorkeling

Uh, no. The cruise was $8K per person. Small expedition boats are expensive, as in Antarctica. In both cases only small groups can land in order to minimize environmental impact. The Galapagos have cheaper options though. You can do 3-4 day cruises instead of a whole week. Or you can be...
