    Sierra-at-Tahoe, CA January 5, 2025

Wow. Sierra at Tahoe looks like the back bowls of Vail now, sorry sad joke. I have only one day at Sierra at Tahoe, with my son back in 2013. It was a great powder day and we had a lot of fun. Such beautiful trees! So sad many are gone. My old trip report: https://www.dcski.com/articles/1388

    Age 70 ski free

Anyone else out there enjoying age 70 free skiing? Tell us who, what and where :) I started doing it last year. Skied at Massanutten, VA and Monarch, CO. Monarch actually lets you start doing it at age 69. Massanutten charged a $25 processing fee, which included an RFID card. Monarch...

Tahoe is a mess....The toxic blend of billionaires and angry townies has become unbearable.

I hit midweek at Palisades in early March 2024. Lift lines not bad. Parking and traffic somewhat busy, but manageable. It was right after one of those huge Tahoe atmospheric river type dumps and conditions were great once the visibility cleared. I'd been to Palisades-Tahoe for two days about...

Park City and Deer Valley look miserable over the holidays

That Miners Camp lodge in your photo is always quite a busy place on big days at Park City. I have quite a few days at Park City, but IIRC the last was in 2020. Since then I've kind of stuck to Ikon. It's a huge place and fun to explore in good conditions and moderate crowds.

Tahoe is a mess....The toxic blend of billionaires and angry townies has become unbearable.

I spent five days in the Tahoe basin last March. It was right after a big ~40" storm and all roads in the area were still pretty messed up. We arrived at Alpine Meadows on Monday afternoon and skied in the tail end of the stormy weather, windy and low viz with some weird crusty surfaces...

    World Affairs

RIP Jimmy Carter, a former president who became a Sunday school teacher. How great is that? I never voted for him, yet he was probably the most wholesome and decent president in my lifetime.

    Sick/Injured During a Ski Trip

Yeah, somebody asked me this fall if I'd ever had a serious, show stopping ski injury. And I never had anything that kept me out more than a week, and very few that kept me out more than a day. Shortly after, my back went out before the season even started 😶‍🌫️ It's gradually getting better...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

I've eaten at a few InOuts during my western travels. We don't have them in the mid-Atlantic. I ate at a terrible one in Vegas once, but have tried a good one in the Salt Lake Valley a few times. I like Five Guys the best of the burger chains, and especially like their fries,, but they are...

    Mammoth, Dec. 19-20, 2024

Way to get out there! I've had a very sore lower back condition for two weeks and have not yet begun my ski season. It's troubling because I did not do anything excessively strenuous to deserve it:icon-confused: Old age I guess? But it's slowly improving and I hope to ski a few times locally...

Peak Rankings List of Best US Ski Areas video

Not sure if this 38 minute video/list from November 2024 has been discussed here already this fall, but I thought it was a pretty intelligent and entertaining assessment. They rank 25 US ski destinations from worst to best. The big one I might quibble with is Palisades-Tahoe being placed down...

    Southern French Alps: Off-The-Beaten-Path Ideas

That footprint comparison seems small-ish for an area with 30 or more ski lifts? I noted your comment in your report that in 2023 the lift pass was not reciprocal between the two - Vars/Risoul. I wonder if that has been fixed? I'll have to see if my daughter plans any sightseeing in a gateway...

    Holiday Ski Plans, again!

I've made the drive by the Dinosaur Natl Mon area several times in recent years. Once coming up from Glenwood Springs (very remote two lane roads) and a couple times from Steamboat Springs (via US 40, two lanes in spots but able to go 60-70 MPH). I never stopped at the Monument itself. It's a...

    Southern French Alps: Off-The-Beaten-Path Ideas

The Vars report by James is excellent. Shared it with daughter. I assume her accommodations costs are covered by husband's employer and skiing in the region appears extensive and high enough to support some decent skiing no matter what.

    Southern French Alps: Off-The-Beaten-Path Ideas

Just found out my daughter, the one that likes durian fruit, is planning to ski at a place in the southern Alps called Vars in January 2025. I have no idea how she found this place or what her motivations are? Vars appears to have a vertical of 1100m and 50+ lifts! It tops out at about...

    World Affairs

I don't agree with everything in this NY Post piece, but the author does a pretty good job of listing the variety of disruptive political events recently occurring around the globe: here. The author's suggestion for a common theme seems to be that we are in a time of instability, with the old...

    Vietnam

My four adult kids spent two weeks recently in Indonesia including time in Jakarta and Bali. One of them lives there for State Dept/Foreign Service. A brave daughter tried fresh durian, said it tastes delicious. But another reported the obnoxiously strong sulfur smell. Notice she's eating...

    Where to Ski: Europe Guides

Anybody ever use the Glacier Express in winter to ski at both St. Moritz and Zermatt on the same trip? That always struck me as a fun thing to attempt. Another bucket list item I had was to ski the Vallée Blanche, but that doesn't seem too fun/feasible anymore: Might not be embeddable , see...
