    Ski Area Count 2023-2025 Updates

...efforts in this way." My general MO is that I a) enjoy discovering new-to-me regions where I speak the language, b) tend to prefer non-industrial ski areas but also like going to the big interconnected ones during off-peak periods, c) don't require or feel comfortable in double-black/DFU...

...groomed pistes going through open rolling meadows. They seem to parallel one another, so there is not much difference between them. Industrial skiing. The exception is the new terrain and 2 new 6-packs at Mount Valaisan. A lot of nice steep bowls and chutes that no one was using. The ski...

...I stuck it out and finally got on the lift in 15 minutes. At the top was a huge throng of people and the first ten turns were a scene from industrial-ski-area hell, but just as quickly everyone disappeared and I skied the last 2,700 verts in complete solitude right to the bottom. A...

...chicken on the one-lane roads through the towns. Luckily it's very quiet on weekdays. Monterosa is really the antithesis of the French industrial ski centers. Prices in Italy in general are also very reasonable. I am looking to return at some point. Maybe combine it with a few days in La...

    Monterosa Ski (Gressoney / Alagna / Champoluc, Italy ): February 1, 2023

...since the Alagna lifts and Indren tram were on a slight wind delay. The village of Gressoney La Trinite was quite attractive - no French industrial skiing here! It looks like there was a great restaurant at the Punta Jolanda (top of the lift from Gressoney La Trinite). Would like to try...

Which North American Skiers Should Ski in Europe?

...of the time you're skiing right up to the lifts, same as North America. Also, you're only riding high-capacity trams and chairs at the industrial joints. The Chairlift – They are very quick to put down the safety bar however, so be ready immediately upon loading, its not optional, and they...

Les Arcs, France, Jan. 23, 2023

...I skied 18,900 vertical. We had about a 1.5 hour drive to our next stop in the Maurienne Valley. Paradiski is a candidate for "most industrial ski area." Per Laurent Vanat's International Report on Snow and Mountain Tourism Les Arcs and La Plagne combine for about 4.7 million skier visits...

Which North American Skiers Should Ski in Europe?

I have for another project (still in limbo) constructed crowd indicies based upon estimated skier visits vs. acreage and lift capacity. Crowds do not factor into snow preservation score. Places like Snowbird and Mammoth get hammered fast on powder days, but for overall retention of packed...

Which North American Skiers Should Ski in Europe?

It would probably be difficult to quantify; however, wouldn't skier numbers (especially those that are affected by Ikon/Epic Pass) have an impact on the condition of snow? We already know that the industrial joints are going to put a lot more wear and tear on surfaces.

    Auron, France, Feb. 3, 2023

...though it's less than 90 minutes from Nice. In fact, four out of the five stops on my Maritime Alps road trip (Auron, Roubion, Valberg, Val d'Allos) were like that. Only Isola's purpose-built base had the industrial feel of mega resorts a few hours north; however, the skiing itself was top-shelf.

    Sansicario, Italy, Jan. 25, 2023

Yes, glad you are aware of how lucky you are! First, this area probably has the most erratic snowfall in the Alps! To then find yourself here just after a good dump, + it remaining cold + it being a week day (avoiding the Turin crowds) is truly exceptional!

...it was 5 inches new not 18, so I have to rate this one better. This was still a “James ski day” IMHO. The Via Lattea complex may be too industrial for his tastes but: Sansicario is the smallest and least known of the Italian Via Lattea areas. The link to Sauze d’Oulx being closed...

    Alps Weather 2023

...But I would expect them to be making more snow on those lower runs during colder nights now. Lower runs into base areas also inevitably get tons of skier traffic in industrial ski resorts. Base area pistes in the Alps are often not pleasant, especially late in the day scraped down.

...liking North Peak's groomers best. In 2011 my friend Richard went to Keystone while most of the Epic Forum group was at A-Basin. The numbers (acreage vs. skier visits) say Breckenridge is the most "industrial" destination ski area. But Breck has very good high alpine above all that congestion.

I have a few friends that go to Keystone ...and they love it! I just nod approvingly, with no comments. Perhaps Keystone is more East Coast skiing than early season Eldora?

Thanks for posting this. It should be Exhibit A in the discussion from the other thread about U.S. vs. Euro food at ski areas from the standpoint of price (laughable) and variety (fried everything). That said; people are getting nationwide multi-resort season passes for a relative pittance. It...
