    World Cup 2026

My perception is that FIFA wanted the top 4 rated countries (Argentina, Spain, England, France) as the final 4 for ratings and attendance. Does FIFA care how those 4 sort themselves out at the end? It's easy to guess for whom Trump is rooting based upon his opinion of the respective countries'...

    South America 2026

Portillo and especially Las Lenas, like Alaska, is more about the terrain than the powder. And like Mammoth, the fresh snow has a high probability of being wind affected. The you throw in the TISA factor that excavating lifts and getting everything open will take longer than in North America...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

I agree more extreme than James. Apples and oranges. I don't see much of a bias from Patrick in famous vs. under-the-radar places. The Streak has an inherent bias toward higher visibility areas because the smaller places are much less likely to be open outside the Christmas to early April...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

I would first want to know how much and which areas in Switzerland are impacted by the prime season (second week Feb to first week Mar) school holidays. If needing to avoid that period most of the places ChrisC enumerated would favor before those holidays due to low altitude...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

This a very broad debate all over the North American ski world in the Epic/Ikon era: the tradeoff between marquee areas and lower crowds. And this is subjective too. James has always been firmly on one far end of the spectrum on this debate. My attitude is mostly about avoiding worst case...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

Not the point IMHO. I've mentioned multiple times in these threads that we are an unrepresentative group here. The positive is the high knowledge base and usually accurate analyses of terrain and snow. Lifestyle choices are more subjective. The bias towards extended travel and new ski...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

Does it include Schlasman's, where you need to have a transceiver? Bridger is a VERY limited area at the advanced intermediate level IMHO. The lower mountain is quite flat and the upper part is technical DFU as well as most of it requiring a hike. Big Sky's terrain distribution is somewhat...

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

makes bullet points 3-5 above irrelevant to me. Point #1 is actually improved for me because full Ikon is a combined ticket with no surcharge. Thus about half my days in the Ikon era (plus those when Mountain Collective was combined) include some skiing at both areas. As for point #2, my top...

    Europe 26/27

There are lots of Euro reports in this forum. In terms of an overall overview, I this thread should get you started. That's a long enough trip that you can follow the methodology that James, ChrisC and I use. In 20 days you will going to multiple destinations. This calls for renting a car...

    South America 2026

Our 2007 trip was 2 days Portillo, 2 days Arpa, 3 days Valle Nevado, 3 days non-skiing. Once there is adequate snow on the ground, 3-4 days at the iconic lodge would be attractive. I would not reserve anything else in advance. Take your car rental do whatever looks most interesting at the time.

How Many Days to Spend at a Ski Area

I'll first comment that 5 days for ChrisC is about 150K vertical. Accepting that premise I don't see how you can say AltaBird and Jackson don't belong in whatever the top group is, in Jackson's case with caveat that the Lower Faces have acceptable conditions. And I would remove Park City...

I can't argue with either of those. But still, L.A. hosted the finals the last time, and we have rather strong Latin American influence here too.

    World Cup 2026

I've read quite a few comments that the Meadowlands are somewhat of a dump vs. ATT Dallas or SoFi Inglewood. And do we want the final played in a steambath when better options were available? Recall that most of the outdoor East Coast games were played at 5PM or later local time (including...

    World Cup 2026

Nice call by FIFA to have the World Cup final outdoors in New Jersey this upcoming Sunday. :smileyvault-stirthepot: We know that TV $$$$$ wag the dog in these situations, and that's a big strike against the West Coast. But 2PM in Dallas vs. 3PM in NYC seems not a big deal to me. And...

This is a comment I've heard about Telluride. :smileyvault-stirthepot: Some truth unless you can handle the Palmyra hike or brave the Bear Creek sidecountry.

Perhaps the past 15 years have made skiers skittish about committing to a whole week. I'm pleased to see the more flexible options. Liz would probably be interested. Her one day at Portillo in July 2010 was in a windy whiteout with only one lift operating.
