Abasin opens for 2025-26 on Oct 26

I agree. Abasin looks like much less snow than prior years openings based upon the same views from the webcam.

    Patrick's Streak, Ski Travel Priorities

I have never had the opportunity to ski in an indoor ski area. I however, would simply prioritize taking my ski boots. jacket, pants, etc., and don’t think that makes too much of a difference and could rent or improvise. Generally rental skis are high-quality so that would be easy to rent.

Will $ Fast Passes Become Standard?

I think our group on this board can more effectively ski around the bottlenecks. The worst lift-lines at the larger resorts you list is generally their prime intermediate terrain or for other reasons such as Tremblant on the cold days, the gondola gets long lines, but not the chairs.

    Eastern Molehills and Retro Areas

I suspect that West Virginia has enough elevation and perhaps some other unique geography that provides orthographic enhancement. It's rather far from the great lakes, with no other mtns to the west.

    LA Fires: Jan 2025

Thats a crazy increase. I think mine has increased by 50% in that same timeframe due to inflation on replacement and repairs.

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

HKD while now spun off from the Dupre family is North American based. They have a plant/office east of Quebec City and another in Massachusetts.

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Seven Springs historically always had amazing snowmaking. I think it had been more of a snowmaking company with a ski area. The longtime owner was Herman K Dupre (HKD). He was known for his interest and innovation in snowmaking. This was where HKD used to develop and test their snowguns...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

I went to medical school in Cincinnati and therefore for 4 years Perfect North was my home mtn as it was less than 30 minutes away. Somehow they always had snow from mid December to first week of March. In mid winter when they had snowmaking windows they made a lot of snow and the base was...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

My understanding is the majority of the alps see your round precipitation with significant summer rainfall. Is there nearby natural lakes, etc that they pump from?

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

After having skied in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, NY, WV, VT, Ontario and Quebec on the east of the continent, I can attest that the dry snow from snowmaking guns really only appears in the areas that can place an adequate base in the early season and are focusing on surface conditions or when...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Nothing can overcome the physics. Maximum snowmaking is 28 wetbulb. Most of the advances in snowguns has been the lower energy guns. Snowguns fall into 3 categories. Air-water (old, low efficiency, uses massive amounts of compressed air), fan guns (does use nearly as much compressed air...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

Yes as a east side of the continent skier, and someone who tinkered with backyard snowmaking, I can attest to snowguns being able to make dry snow if the ski area is willing to do this and the temps are cold enough. If temps are very cold (under 0 F) or so, it all seems to be dry without the...

    Schweitzer, ID: 03/03/21

For me, I have been finding that plane tickets that provide some flexibility are only slightly more expensive, car rentals can always be cancelled as well. Therefore, I have been booking earlier knowing that I can change if needed.

Where are you going this season (25/26)?

I am going in 2026. Additional seats opened up on the cat. Therefore EMSC and I are both going in January. Now where to ski before or after? So many amazing options in BC.

    PeakRankings: Trips

I was in Colorado this summer for 2 weeks. Stayed in a mix of elevations ranging from 5500-9200 feet. It took exactly 14 days to get fully acclimated to Denver elevation. I have found that the most telling sport for acclimatization is lap swimming as you can’t really increase one’s...

Yes, i have seen this in my own parent. They lived in Silverthorne after retirement, however as they aged the high altitude affected my father and they relocated to Denver suburbs.

What Is An Industrial Ski Resort -- And Is It Necessarily Bad?

My local mountain Blue Mtn in Ontario would likely be an industrial mountain. After skiing there, anywhere in Colorado seems much better.

    Banff/Lake Louise late February?

I woke up at Lake Louise one January in 2019 or 2020 to -46c. Went to LL to ski and they never opened that day. High temp never climbed above -33c. We ended up going for a hike near the lake and discovered sound propagation is much further in extreme cold.
