    Western North America Conditions 2025/26

I ruined my own joke but Tony addressed the point. I was trying to say that I needed to have sharp edges for Colorado.

I'm considering getting a base grind to prepare for my visit to Colorado in two weeks. :eusa-think:

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

At the risk of belaboring the obvious, the highlighted sentence below is the second time in this thread (the first was his inaugural post in California) where our protagonist openly states his MO: "Collecting ski areas sometimes requires hard decisions." There's no mention of maximizing the...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

That's not the point and you know it. I just don't understand the pearl clutching about Project101 and not The Streak. If someone enjoys skiing as a way to reach some desired number, why get so annoyed?

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

You mean this melodramatic morality play that you and Chris are staging? Isn't this more or less the same animal as Patrick's streak?

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

Hah! I should have known in advance that bringing up Project101 was going to trigger you and Tony. Who does this sound like? :eusa-think: To be fair, certain people here also count individual villages as part of their ski-area list. :eusa-whistle:

Young Males Keep Falling From Chairlifts Out West

In an example of speaking out both sides of my mouth -- most of the lifts at Greek Peak, NY are very old and not high off the ground so on a handful of rides last week, a) we didn't bother to lower the bar, and b) lifties didn't scold or reprimand us for it. For us and I suspect many people...

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

Not of tremendous importance but I have a request for information about Electra on Harv's forum. Will post when I get an answer. I should've just glided down and checked it out myself.

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

I suppose that if I get sufficiently motivated, I can fill out my own profile page like the one below. Tony now has a working template to recreate his skiing profile on FTO (so people don't need to be referred to his 1998-era website or viewer-unfriendly spreadsheets :icon-lol:).

    Mt. Shasta, June 17-19, 2011

Who knew? The green circle, blue square, and black diamond symbols used almost universally at today’s North American ski resorts were actually designed by Disney for use at the proposed Mineral King ski resort. https://www.peakrankings.com/content/why-disneys-attempt-at-a-ski-resort-failed

    Mt. Shasta, June 17-19, 2011

The extent of above-treeline terrain in these pix is impressive for the U.S. It could be Val d'Isere.

    Mt. Shasta, June 17-19, 2011

Shasta was a popular soft drink in the 70s (apparently it's still sold in the west but no longer has the iconic logo?). We knew that the mountain was located in California so it felt very exotic. "It hasta be Shasta!"

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

I only have a half dozen GP visits but I know enough that without a hard right on the northfacing section in your purple diamond, you'll end up in someone's backyard. As mentioned, we just wanted to keep it low-angle, especially in the trees. Moreover, my wife does not take kindly to walking...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

Since this is no longer a western-only USA visit, I've moved the thread to the general forum and retitled it slightly. He's currently hitting some midwestern (including Illinois!) mounds that would barely rate as toboggan hills around here. FYI: Google Translate often strips photos out of the...

    Mt. Shasta, June 17-19, 2011

Why is Mount Shasta never mentioned on FTO? Tony's excellent report 14 years ago was the most recent. While the big draw is the alpine, the below-treeline lift-served terrain would qualify as lower-medium size for North America with a reported vertical of 1,400 to 2,000 feet. Does its location...

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

We only skied #1 and the right edge of #2 last week because they were low-angle enough for my wife. Both were in beautiful sugary condition. IIRC, Aesop's (in the middle) had some bare spots.
