Our Litigious Culture At U.S. Ski Areas

Here's one of the first times I saw something at a foreign ski area that would be unthinkable in the U.S. due to our liability laws and litigious culture: night sledding at Morzine in France's Portes du Soleil (scroll halfway down the report). You can see in this pic that participants weren't...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

I use the trip reports more as an "evergreen" resource to identify new (to me) places to go, where they don't need to be recent. As noted above, up-to-date conditions is one of the areas where Alpinfans is definitely the better ski forum. It's German-language so of course you'll see those...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

I politely asked him why he chose that route and his reply is toward the bottom of page 2 -- confirming that the itinerary was more or less set in stone. To be fair: as you've pointed out numerous times, an audible in western North America is a whole different ballgame than in the Alps...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

I thought I mentioned it last season but maybe not. Alpinfans was started a few years ago by Swiss superposter Ski-Chrigel (120-140 days a season) who was permanently banned from Alpinforum because he criticized the webmaster/founder too many times. He started his own forum, which has several...

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

I'll ask him if that's his actual MO. Our visit at Greek Peak was as good as it gets for a non-pow day in the northeast. Not a waste!

I may be having a senior moment; however, I don't recall that story. Glad to see that she's recovered and is back on the horse. This pic can serve as a reference for legitimate packed powder:

    Project 101: USA Road Trip

This skier from Zurich on the Alpinfans forum is posting reports from a six-week road trip (I ran the link through Google Translate) across the entire U.S. armed with Epic, Ikon, and Indy passes. Here's where he started: So far he's been to China Peak, Dodge Ridge, Lee Canyon, Arizona...

    Beer thread

This reminds me of a truly odd institution during my tour of duty in 1980s Colorado: 3.2 beer and the bars that served it. My GF back then was a waitress at Pogo's on the hill in Boulder. American beer at the time was for the most part pretty awful so I didn't drink it, "full" strength or not.

    Europe 2025/26

I asked Fraser if this is a Retour d'Est setup given the way it hits the southwestern Alps, including the French Maritimes. His reply: Not a classic one, not yet at least. For that, there needs to be a proper Genoa low and a much tighter wraparound that comes back into the Mercantour, Queyras...

Fraser's report yesterday: Today in the Alps... Updated: 2pm Sunday 11 January 2026 – Sun and fresh snow in the Alps today... The big storm in the Alps is over, with the last of the clouds breaking up across the north and most regions left with a gloriously sunny, if still very cold, day...

    Northern VT: what a start

It's like repeatedly comparing a modest local diner that serves a good soup and sandwich with a large (for U.S. standards) fine dining establishment that has a well-regarded wine cellar. I recall a dozen years ago taking my son for his adaptive ski lesson at Camelback after returning from a...

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

I remembered this 2008 thread about how the status of trails, glades, safety bars, etc. at Greek and other ski areas goes back and forth between open, restricted, and then open again depending on a variety of factors.

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

As everyone knows, the lift situation there is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. A younger guy on NY Ski Forum, snoloco, seems to have a PhD-level of knowledge about uphill transport and snowmaking. Maybe @Harvey can dig out his review of Greek's infrastructure as I couldn't find...

It appears that things have changed at Les Contamines since you posted that map yesterday showing all the closed lifts. I'd like to go back as my visit three years ago with sub-optimum snow only allowed me to get an overview of the place.

    Greek Peak, NY: 01/08/26

Early last week, Jason and I were comparing notes about skiing on Thursday because it looked like a sunny day with above-freezing temps before the likely gully washer forecast for Friday and Saturday. He was planning on Belleayre while my wife and I were headed up to Central New York for the...

Nice pix. Isn't it interesting how decades later battery duration in cold weather is still something that hasn't been sorted out by manufacturers? Has anyone had good experiences?

    LA Fires: Jan 2025
