    Harv's NY/VT Pictures Thread

Exemplifying the close connection between farms and skiing in upstate NY, you can see Bobcat's ridgeline in the right corner of my 2004 photo. A second sign was still there when I drove past in 2013 but no idea if it still stands.

    Northern VT: what a start

Sunday pix from Jay's Instagram, still looking nice. They're now claiming 236 inches. Will be interesting to see how much damage Friday's unpleasant forecast will do.

    Harv's NY/VT Pictures Thread

In addition to the in-action pix, I love the quiet wintry atmosphere in this one -- Harv usually takes an "approach shot" like this near the ski area. I drove through the exact still life recently along the NY/PA state line (but it could be anywhere in the rural northeast or Quebec).

    More Telluride Mismanagement

Even if the strike hadn't taken place, how much of the mountain could they have opened with the poor snowfall to date? Whenever I speak with my brother in Denver, he says that it's 70+ degrees (and that gas costs $1.59!).

    Eldora, CO 2025-26

During my tour of duty there 40 years ago, Boulder had already developed into a satire-ready enclave of (as someone at a party described it) "capitalism with a performative conscience and a detailed spreadsheet." I may have mentioned how French grad students at CU used to refer to the town as...

Can Snowmaking Compensate for Climate Change?

While state funding can't change Belleayre's topography, it's amazing how much has evolved there in the past dozen years, specifically snowmaking and the (to me, ridiculous) gondola. Both have completely transformed perceptions of the ski area.

    Crans-Montana, CH, Jan. 14, 2024

That along with the potential culprit shown in this promotional video for the nightclub (there are also clips showing the fire from inside the space that I won't post here). Given how they advertised these sparkler champagne bottles in a place with a low wooden ceiling and one exit, one wonders...
