    UtahSLC Lodging

If you have points for Hampton Inns, that means Hhonors, which you can use at Homewood Suites. There's one in Sandy, very convenient to the Cottonwood Canyons, with an indoor pool. There's also one downtown, which is less convenient for the CCs, but a bit closer to other areas. That one...

    The Alta porcupine

I've also seen a cute little porcupine a couple of times near the base of the Snake Creek lift at Brighton. Fortunately not as ''friendly'' as the one in Admin's video, however!

    SW fare sale

Hope this doesn't run afoul of posting rules (and I'm sure Admin can re-post if that's the case), but I just got news of a very nice fare sale on a few dates on SW airlines to SLC and Denver (and maybe other places). The sale is today only. I booked from DC to Denver Feb. 27- Mar. 5 for $134...

    Heavenly, Dec. 16- 18, 2012

For what it's worth, the 3 pix of Heavenly, which I took with my Blackberry, ranged from 500 - 950 KB. I suspect that if the limit could be raised to 1 MB, most pix could be posted without re-sizing. Maybe that's not feasible, but memory these days is pretty cheap....

    Heavenly, Dec. 16- 18, 2012

Sorry this took so long, but I was tied up with other stuff after the trip. Here are the pix re-sized, if anyone is interested. Of course, in terms of seeing the conditions, these pix have been OBE, as it were, since Tahoe has gotten multiple feet since Dec. 18. BTW, I did download and used...

    Heavenly, Dec. 16- 18, 2012

I'd be happy to upload larger images, but the original images are too big (FTOL limit is 200KB), and I've tried several times to re-size them, and this small one is the only size that seems to be under the limit. Part of the problem is that my re-sizing software (Windows Live Photo Gallery)...

    Heavenly, Dec. 16- 18, 2012

Wife Sarah and I skied Heavenly Dec 16- 18. First 2 days were stormy, with several lifts shut down (Sky, Dipper much of the time, sometimes Tamarack and Canyon), but surface conditions were superb. Even in deep mogul troughs, you never hit any left-over crud from the rain a couple of weeks...

    Kirkwood 12-14-2012

Good luck on your 50 days, tseeb! I only wish I could aspire to a goal like that! In case you're thinking about Northstar in the near future, I offer the following observation based on our experience today: The one run we did off Zephyr was rather hard packed and crowded. Then we conneceted...

    Kirkwood 12-14-2012

Wife Sarah and I had a great first day (for us) of the ski season at Kirkwood. First time there, and we loved it. They claim to have gotten 21 inches from the storm a few days ago, and with the cold temps, it was well preserved, so surfaces were powder on ungroomed and packed powder on groomed...

Info on potential buyers of Wisp

Yes, thanks, I did see it when it came out, and I was happy to see that Wisp will stay in business. I know this isn't saying much, but they're the best we've got within a 3-hour drive from DC! I also think they've got a pretty good business model; they just erally over-extended themselves...

    Tahoe

We're hoping to make use of our Vail group passes to get in a few early season turns before Christmas, so I've been keeping an eye on Summit Co and the Tahoe area. Summit hasn't been looking very good, but Tahoe has gotten a few decent dumps, yet they don't seem to have much terrain open. In...

Info on potential buyers of Wisp

I saw the news that Wisp is in bankruptcy and negotiating with 2 potential buyers. Anyone have any info on who they are? We haven't skied Wisp the last few years, but it's the best we've got within a reasonable driving distance for a weekend trip from the DC area, so I'd hate to see it close. :-(

    N. Mex. & So. Col. Dec/Jan?

Certainly in a normal year -- and if your budget constraint isn't very binding-- WC wouldn't be much competition for Vail! It's only a fraction of the size. (But it's also only a fraction of the price.) Great option, though, to keep in your pocket for seasons like last year.

    N. Mex. & So. Col. Dec/Jan?

Two lessons I learned from my experience last year were not to lock in plans for a specific resort until the snow's on the ground; and if you're thinking Colorado, keep Wolf Creek on your short list. They have the most snow in Colorado, and with the drought in the rest of the state, that...

Where to spend next winter on a budget?

When we were slaves of the school schedule, we used to ski SLC the week between Christmas and New Year's, and Colorado (mostly Copper and Keystone in those days) over Prez Day or MLC holiday. So, we were in both areas at pretty much peak times. From my experience in the CCs (especially Brighton...

Question about Spring Aspects and Corn

Well, if corn snow is really like kernels, I guess I didn't find the corny grail at Wolf Creek after all. It certainly didn't appear granular at all. But in terms of how it skied, it matches the description -- velvety, with a bit of top layer peeling off with each turn, and good support...

Question about Spring Aspects and Corn

This discussion makes me feel good to know that not everyone on this forum other than myself is among the corn cognoscenti. For awhile, whenever I went spring skiing, I was looking for something with large granules, like kernels. (God knows why that would make a pleasant surface!) A...

Breck, Vail, and Keystone - March 25-27

Yes, we considered A-basin based on its elevation, but we couldn't find anyone who had skied it in the last few days, and after a week of REALLY warm and sunny conditions on a thin pack, my guess was that even altitude could not have preserved the quality of snow well on ungroomed runs, and much...

Breck, Vail, and Keystone - March 25-27

The lesson I take from Breck on March 25 is that when you’re in the freeze at night, thaw in the day cycle, you shouldn’t get out too early, but you’ve also gotta be careful of being too late, especially on a warmish and very sunny day. We took our time getting started, and did our first run...

    Wolf Creek, CO March 21-23

It's true that what's going to happen to precip is very unclear. The global circulation models are inconsistent in their predictions even on which direction this will move in many geographic areas. But I don't think it's the case that higher altitudes will warm less than lower. ( I haven't...
