Request for advice: first time visit to Vail

We're going to be skiing Summit/ Eagle the next 3 days -- could be Vail, Breck, BC, or A-basin. Any advice other than what's already been posted about Vail? At this point, I know we're not going to find powder -- packed or otherwise -- anywhere, but I just wonder if some areas of these resorts...

    Wolf Creek, CO March 21-23

Once again, as in early January, my wife and I were planning a week trip to the Summit/ Eagle County area of Colorado, but decided at the last minute to go to Wolf Creek for part of the week. This time our decision was due to the fact that the Summit/ Eagle resorts got 1- 5 inches from the...

    Breck & Vail, Mar 9-11

Yes, and johnnash et ux are going to give it another try in Summit/ Eagle next week, still hoping to get some value from our season passes. I've been tracking the weather reports, and sad to say that since needhamskier was there, it's been highs in the 40s - lo 50s and sunny pretty much every...

    heated gloves

Thanks, Bryan. I looked at the Oxford Gloves website and the price is certainly right for their heated gloves, but they give absolutely no information about them other than that you get 4 hours per charge. And they're currently out of stock. How long have you had yours? Do you use them...

    Mt. Bachelor, OR 3/9-10/2012

When we visited Bachelor a couple of years ago, Deschutes's Jubilail got my vote for best beer I ever tasted. I brought back a couple of bottles, and regretted not bringing more!

Temporary lift ticket deal at SLC Costco

I'm not a local, but on my last few trips to SLC, I've ben able to score some cheap tix by checking the local craigslist and searching ''lift tickets''. Be sure and ask if the tix have any restrictions, and see if you're comfortable. Also, since some of the resorts now use RFID tix, so you...

    Tahoe 1/30-2/3

I forgot to mention one other trick that sometimes pays off when using FF miles. If you find that no economy seats are available at the ''saver'' level (12,500 miles each way in United; mor or less the same on other carriers, I believe), so you'll have to pay ''full fare'' (25,000 miles each...

Temporary lift ticket deal at SLC Costco

This explains why I kept seeing those passports when I was checking the SLC craigslist! Some guys were advertising the 3-pack of Snowbasin, Canyons, and Sundance for prices ranging from (I think) $35 up for the whole book. I have to admit I was suspicious it was some kind of scam, but I guess...

    Tahoe 1/30-2/3

I’d put it this way: For travel at peak periods to popular destinations, you’re not going to get a cheap seat using either miles or $$$ unless you plan in advance. But if you do that and are somewhat flexible on dates, using miles can be a smart strategy. I’ve booked several award trips to...

    Tahoe 1/30-2/3

I don't know much about powder (neither how to predict it, nor how to ski it!), but I do know something about FF programs, and this kind of short notice situation is exactly how to get the most value from your miles. Booking a paid flight on short notice will cost you an arm and a leg (and...

    Brighton 2/11

For the last day of our trip, my wife and I decided to ski Brighton, notwithstanding that we were staying in Park City. We always have a soft spot in our hearts for Brighton, and I was also curious how the mini-drought was affecting it. I had skied there Jan. 31, so I could make a...

Deer Valley 2/9 and Canyons 2/10 -- better than expected

My wife and I skied DV Thursday and Canyons (Sarah's instructor got us half-price tix) Friday. Our expectations were not super-high, but for the most part surfaces were not bad. In both places, there was in most places adequate packed powder on the blue groomers, and the ungroomed was fun as...

Park City Lift Tickets and Best Snow

There have recently been some tix for PC resorts advertised on SLC Craigslist. Search under ''lift tickets.''

    Avalanches - Canyons sidecountry 1/23/12

I note that LCC road is closed this morning for avi control, with estimated opening time 8:30. Is there likely to be a humongous back-up of cars waiting for the opening?

    Avalanches - Canyons sidecountry 1/23/12

At Solitude, they're still bombing the bejeesus out of Honeycomb, which they say won't open before Thursday earliest. Otherwise, the conditions were great today. No fresh powder, but packed/ loose powder surfaces everywhere, with only a few rocks poking through on steeps.

    couple of SLC questions

Following Tony's (and others') season-pass-be-damned advice, our little group re-booked, and we're headed for SLC instead of Heavenly. Given subsequent developments, this looks to be a very good move, so thanks to all for the advice. \:D/ BTW, our friends are flying Southwest, and had NO...

    advice for Colorado

After driving back from Wolf Creek to Vail Friday morning, I skied a few last runs at Vail. Since it was so late, I just skied in the area I could access most quickly, which turned out to be Lionshead, since the Riva Bahn was shut down due to some kind of fire. The conditions were highly...

    advice for Colorado

I really wonder when jamesdeluxe's s picture was taken of the back bowls at Vail, because when we skied Vail on Jan.1, at least part of the back bowls was pretty much fully covered with snow, as my picture showed. I'm sure the coverage wasn't enough to ski, but the picture I posted was very...

    advice for Colorado

We’ve been skiing Wolf Creek the last 2 days and our thanks go to Tony, ESMC and others who suggested this. The drive from Vail is totally worth it, given the superior conditions. We love the resort, which has the kind of laid-back feeling of others that have been our favorites, like Brighton...

    advice for Colorado

Today we skied Beaver Creek, and the conditions are pretty much the same as Vail's. I had hoped for better, thinking perhaps BC had more snow-making. A shuttle driver told us that BC had already exhausted their water quota for snow-making, boding really badly for the future. In any case, the...
