    After- Christmas strategy around SLC

Our family will be travelling Christmas night, so the 26th will be our first day on the slopes. I've watched happily as the snow reports have justified Admin's faith in last week's weather forecasts! We'll have 5 ski days, most of which we'll spend in the Cottonwood Canyons, but I'm thinking...

    How much snow is enough?

Thanks, Admin. You've allayed my concerns. I also note that some of the resorts are starting to open some good stuff. Brighton's got Great Western open (though still not Milly), Sol's got Honeycomb, and Snowbasin has John Paul. With those new storms rolling in, I guess there'll be a LOT more...

    How much snow is enough?

Re. your advice not to stay in Park City, no need to worry about that. I probably wouldn't want to anyway, but over Christmas break I'd have to take a second mortgage (if any bank is making those loans anymore)! But I checked the numbers being reported on the websites, and they really look...

    How much snow is enough?

Question for you SLCers: We're headed to SLC on our annual Christmas pilgrimage, and so I've been enthusiastically watching the recent reports of all the snow. But I'm somewhat dismayed that with all that snow, the resorts still aren't opening a lot of new terrain. I know there was a big...

    American Airlines ski fare sale

AA.com has some very nice fares to Eagle/Vail, Steamboat, Jackson Hole, Telluride, and Gunnison. If you're flexible with times, RT from DC to Steamboat or Vail fare is $181 incl tax. That's cheap! Other destinations are more, but still a lot lower than normal.

    heated ski gloves

I recently saw heated ski gloves some advertised, and this seems like a pretty good idea for those of us who are thermally digitally challenged. (I've used the one-time chemical handwarmer packs on occasion, and they're OK, but don't last a full day, are a bit awkward, and get expensive over...

    MidAtlantic Skiing, Help me out!

Welcome! This is a link to the Washington Post's guide to all the resorts in the area, with links to the websites of each one: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/tr ... i/resorts/ As I'm sure you're already aware, there's a reason this area is called the heart of the MASH (Mid-Atlantic Snow...

    Sandy vs Midvale

Our family loves the Homewood Suites, and they're one of the few places to offer 2-bedroom units, in which you could sleep 5-6, which would make it pretty economical for a group your size.

    Spring Break 2008

Over the last few years, we've skied Mammoth, Summit County, and last spring 2008 Salt Lake City. Mammoth was great, and as Tony's wesite will tell you, is statistically one of the best bets for spring, but it's not an easy trip to get there. Around SLC, we're big fans of Solitude, but I don't...

    Solitude 27 Mar 08

Don't know if you're planning another day at Soli, but if so, you should consider a run into Honeycomb Canyon. If you're like me, you may have felt a bit intimidated by all the black on the trail map in the canyon. But when I finally tried a run down the bottom of the canyon, it was wonderful...

Any last minute, last week of March CO advice?

We skied Keystone, Vail and A-basin last year in mid-April in a somewhat warm period. The bottom of Vail and Keystone were total slush, but Blue Sky Basin was still more or less winter surface conditions. The other back bowls and Game Creek Bowl were a bit slushy by the afternoon, but...

At the Canyons next week: a few questions

Hi, OHski: Like you, we're traveling without our boarder son, so we just skied Deer Valley for the first time on March 18. It was fun, but in IOHO overrated, in particular because we actually had to wait in lift lines -- never awful (10 minutes), but more than we expected. That said, it's...

    Solitude and Snowbird, UT 3/9/2008

We'll be driving through the CCs next week and would love to see some locals of the white furry kind. Whenever we go to the CC resorts, I always keep my eyes peeled, but have never been so lucky. (We did, however, have fun once watching a moose belly-deep in snow, munching on some greenery she...

    Where to go March 17-21

Thanks to all for the advice. Based on these reassurances -- and also the fact that it's really tough to find space in Summit Co. (I guess all CO school systems must be on spring break this week) or at Mammoth -- we decided to go to SLC. This experience of looking for space at the last minute...

    Where to go March 17-21

I'm just about to start planning our last hurrah spring trip out west, March 17-21, and I'm trying to decide where to go. I've paid attention to Tony's advice -- that on average places like Mammoth and Bachelor tend to have the best spring conditions -- but I wonder about this year. When I...

    First time to Utah

Hi, I'm sure you'll get more comprehensive info from Admin and others who live in SLC, but for what it's worth, I'm attaching below my report from my family's first trip a couple of years ago. We've been to SLC 2 times since then and I would just add a few things: (1) Unlike our first trip...

Loveland or Copper for Friday 2/1

We just got back from Copper. The conditions were fabulous, and it was snowing like crazy when we left Monday morning. Broke our hearts to leave. Don't know if you have time for this before you leave, but we got coupons on Ebay for Copper tix for $44 weekday and $50 weekend. If you...

    Tucker Mountain (Copper) question

Hi, I'll be skiing Copper Jan 25-27 with 3 teenage boarders, and the Tucker Mtn snowcat sounds like fun. But 2 quick questions: (1) I see this is on a first-come-first serve basis, so what is a realistic expectation about the wait? (2) We've never done back-country and I just want to be sure...

A-Basin, CO 1-12-08 (New Montezuma Bowl)

We were at A-Basin in mid-April last year and can confirm that it still had winter conditions (including snow still coming down!), except at the very bottom of the mountain, where there had clearly been some melting and re-freezing. But there's no reason to ski down there anyway except when...
